the Chilean miners rescue was watched by tens of millions of people worldwide. These workers are now heros internationally for their great collective struggle underground to stay alive. Unfortunately they are now being corralled by the Chilean President and his right wing capitalist allies. We are squatters from the Netherlands. We are asking you to join us in our struggle against the squatting prohibition. We will have two demonstrations this week, on 1st October in Amsterdam and 2nd October in Nijmegen. This week mayor of Amsterdam said that in coming months 200 squats will be evicted in the city!!! The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today praised the successful intervention by Irish Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern to block a proposed European Commission data-sharing plan with Israel. If adopted, the proposal would have given the go-ahead to EU member states to allow the transfer to and storage of sensitive personal data on European citizens to Israel. read full story / add a comment

Because of human rights omission New Zealand has suffered major social problems, some social statistics worse than other countries, at the bottom of the social scale but it is hidden from mainstream New Zealanders. Fear is pervasive and there is a sense of hoelessness which is holding back progress and adaptation to global changes. A focus on the truth rather than power politics and the 'money grab' will help overcome this. It has, in my opinion, modeled itself on the British class system permitting mass social class discrimination. read full story / add a comment

For Immediate Publication. Iran stoning case, Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is at imminent risk of execution in Tabriz prison. Moreover, her well known human rights lawyer, Mohammad Mostafaei, is in prison in Turkey after having fled the country to evade arrest for his advocacy work. His wife remains in prison in Iran – held hostage – until he is remanded into the regime’s custody (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1652). Given Turkey’s close relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mostafaei can face deportation back to Iran even though he has applied for refugee status with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees there. Campaigners are concerned about the safety of Mostafaei and his wife. We are also extremely concerned for Ashtiani’s life. The regime may be preparing to execute her within the next few days, particularly given that the Tabriz prosecutor has demanded her execution and is awaiting the Tehran high court’s confirmation (http://stopstonningnow.com/wpress/?p=1665). read full story / add a comment

According to reports received by “Human Rights and Democracy activists of Iran Roya Samadi, daughter-in-law of Mansour Osanloo, president of the board of directors of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, was kidnapped and savagely tortured by three agents of Intelligence Ministry. On Wednesday 2nd of Tir (June 23, 2010) Ms. Samadi, while going home from work around 5:30PM, was attacked by three men as soon as she got off the metro train in Karaj. The agents grabbed her by hair and while pulling her by her hair were kicking and punching her. All of this in broad day light in front of all other shocked commuters. Ms. Samadi while crying for help kept repeating that she's Mr. Osanloo's daughter-in-law. The agents put a tape over her mouth as to silence her pleas, and kidnapped her to an undisclosed location. read full story / add a comment

50 Irish farming, food and environmental organisations and businesses sent a letter yesterday (24 June) to the Irish Agriculture Minister, Brendan Smith, asking him to block the European Commission’s latest move to force the approval of more GM crops for cultivation at EU level. Michael O’Callaghan of the GM-free Ireland Network said failure to do so will make it impossible for the Irish Government to implement its policy to ban field trials and cultivation of GM crops in the Republic, and also weaken the credibility of the Government’s proposed voluntary GM-free label that would provide Irish farmers and food producers with a competitive advantage in the global export markets. read full story / add a comment

Several hundred people joined One Law for All on 20 June at Downing Street to show their opposition to Sharia and religious-based laws in Britain and elsewhere and to demand universal rights and secularism. A new report “Sharia Law in Britain: A Threat to One Law for All and Equal Rights” was published on the day to coincide with the rally. Human rights activist Gita Sahgal said of the report: “I think it is highly significant that in Britain there has been silence where there should have been condemnation. There is active support for ‘Sharia laws’ precisely because it is limited to denying women rights in the family. No hands are being cut off, so there can’t be a problem. Unfortunately for us, senior law officers will find that human rights expert bodies often have a similar attitude. They have done little research on the impact of family laws and the denial of justice caused by parallel systems of justice. That is why the findings of this report are so important. SpunOut.ie a national web based youth organisation, is going to run a pilot project youth activist training programme this summer. The organisation has long held the view that younger people are often treated like 'people in waiting' rather that citizens with a right to partcipate in Irish Society. We hope that through efforts, such as this course and some other longer term projects that we are brewing up here in SpunOut.ie that we can help to facilitate younger people to get active about changing the things that bother them .We think this is really urgent at the moment due to the levels of youth unemployment and disengagement from the political or civic sphere here. We are seeking your input and suggestions for the content of our short courses. 26-5-2010 . Yesterday at 6.40pm a thin black horse was subjected to a continuous beating by a Sulkie or harness racing driver in Tallaght, Dublin 24 . The horse which was pulling a two wheeled cart was beaten repeatedly by the driver who was accompanied by a youth. The incident happened opposite the Cukoo’s Nest Pub and all traffic was stopped both ways as the horse reared up on his back legs with fright. He was wide-eyed and not wearing blinkers. He was hit repeatedly with straps or reins by the driver. read full story / add a comment
