Press Release 22-02-2014
FIE has written to Pat Rabbitte asking him to take issue with the Ombudsman who has accepted the Department of Agriculture's claim that the scientific advice provided by Inland Fisheries Ireland for an EU investigation into salmon and sea lice contained 'many inaccuracies', 'fundamental errors', and 'omissions of relevant facts and misleading commentaries' which 'would have had disastrous results for Ireland's reputation had it sent the report to the European Commission'. read full story / add a comment

The European Commission is to reopen the EU investigation into salmon and sea lice closed in September of 2012. The investigation was prompted by submissions from Salmon Watch Ireland and the Friends of the Irish Environment to the Commission in 2009. The closure of the investigation without the ‘express views’ of Inland Fisheries Ireland which the Department of Agriculture denied it held led to a series of ‘Requests for Redress for Maladministration’ lodged by Friends of the Irish Environment to two Irish Government Departments and the European Commission. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Oxfam Ireland deplores today’s cut in Ireland's aid budget “Oxfam Ireland deplores today’s €100 million cut in Ireland's aid budget and calls for an immediate reversal of this decision. With this cut, our government's promise to the world’s poorest people rings hollow. This is the fourth cut in 10 months – demonstrating that the Irish Government sees the aid budget as a soft target. This cut will have a devastating impact on vulnerable people who are already struggling to cope with the crushing impacts of the global financial crisis, the food crisis and climate change. These are difficult times for us all but it is not the time to abandon our commitment to tackling poverty and injustice. Ireland's international standing will be damaged even further by this decision to turn its back on the world’s poorest when they need our assistance most” said Jim Clarken, Chief Executive of Oxfam Ireland. read full story / add a comment
