ROPES is a literary journal produced by the students of the MA in Literature and Publishing at NUI Galway. The theme of the journal this year is independence, and the ROPES team is seeking poetry, prose and artwork submissions that explore gaining, losing, rejecting and sustaining independence. ROPES 2016 will be the journal?s 24th volume and is due out in spring 2016.The journal is entirely self-funded, and to cover the production costs the young publishers behind ROPES are seeking to raise €1,500 through the Ireland-based crowdfunding website Fund It. read full story / add a comment

The Dublin Suicide Prevention Project (DSPP) is an education and learning initiative which is being established to develop suicide prevention within communities and equip residents with the knowledge to refer at risk people to reach professional services. In a submission to the National Peatlands Strategy, Friends of the Irish Environment have pointed out that total emissions from our bogs are of the same scale as total emissions from the transport sector. However, the authors write that ‘the importance of our peatlands for the climate is not correctly acknowledged by the draft Strategy. As a result the draft Strategy fails to integrate with climate change policy and indeed is in conflict with Ireland's obligations under the UNFCCC.’ read full story / add a comment

Ahead of tomorrow’s opening of the An Bord Pleanala hearing into the plans for the clean up of the old steel plant’s toxic dump on Haulbowline Island, Friends of the Irish Environment [FIE] has called for the work to be extended to the site of the steel plant itself. The current proposal is limited to the 9 hectare waste dump on the island. FIE says numerous reports show that the contamination on the island includes not just the 9 hectare East Tip which is the subject of the license hearing but the 12 hectare site of the steel plant itself which is being ignored. read full story / add a comment

PRESS RELEASE - MONDAY 3 MARCH - FRIENDS OF THE IRISH ENVIRONMENT Call on Minister over salmon farm ‘wipe-out’ Simon Coveney is being asked to give the figures of the escapees from the recent storm damage to a salmon farm in Bantry Bay. A written parliamentary question tabled by Clare Daly, TD, is due for reply later this week. According to the west cork based Friends of the Irish Environment, the farm has effectively been ‘wiped out’. In a statement released today, the group said that they ‘understand that there are only between 3,000 and 5,000 fish left at a site that held between 160,000 – 180,000 salmon.’ ‘Simon Coveney should have known about the extent of the loses since the fish were moved and counted on 19 February and yet his Department is silent on the subject.’ read full story / add a comment

Below is a statement released by the Maynooth Schools Group this morning. We are having a public meeting tonight (2nd December) to formally commence the campaign to reject the two school model that the Minister and KWETB plan to implement in Maynooth. Indymedia are more than welcome to come along. Our facebook is https://www.facebook.com/MaynoothSchoolsGroup for more information. The Maynooth Schools Group met last night and have reviewed all that has happened to date regarding the new school in Maynooth. We have decided that we completely and formally reject the proposals of the Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Ruairi Quinn and the KWETB's plans of implementation to build two fully vertical and separate schools on the same site in our town. read full story / add a comment

The Gathering-RSVP is an experimental collaboration of artists, located internationally, responding to the question of what it means to be Irish today, in a 2 hr promenade theatre presentation, integrating film, music, dance and poetry with community arts participation. It has been almost twelve years since the Genoa G8 2001 summit demonstrations descended into a Dantes hell for both sides. Amnesty itself has said of Genoa that there was ‘the biggest suspension of democratic rights in a western country since WW2’. Never before have so many communities walked in their woods for a common purpose, to focus on their forests on the same day. Adding to the more than 50,000 who have signed our petition against the sale of the harvesting rights to speculators.
