The Fine Gael led government is trying to break the nurses’ strike with a constant barrage of media propaganda. They say that the country cannot afford the nurses’ pay claim, as other workers would also start to demand a pay rise if they won. But Varadkar and Harris showed no difficulty in finding an extra billion euro to fund the National Children’s Hospitals – even though the projected costs grew by three times. These shocking figures emerged from a voluntary disclosure made by the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association, the industry body that represents the drug companies. The Irish political establishment are rallying behind the KBC bank’s eviction of a family in Strokestown. They are shocked by the level of public support for the family and are trying to divert attention from the central issue. Last Tuesday week, a private security company engaged in a violent attack on elderly people who were ordered to leave their house. They punched, kicked and pulled people by the ears yet nothing was done to stop them. Instead the Gardai closed off a road to facilitate the eviction. read full story / add a comment

The report into the activities of the former Minister, Denis Naughton, on rural broadband is a total whitewash. Naughton held eighteen meetings, and five dinners with representatives of Granahan McCourt. Minutes of these meetings were not kept and there were often no civil servants present. Yet the company was a bidder for the lucrative broadband contract. But aside from Naughton’s unusual behaviour, there is an even bigger scandal looming. Rural broadband was originally supposed to cost some hundreds of millions. But the latest estimate puts that figure at a staggering €3 billion. read full story / add a comment

About 40 schools are due to be inspected because of concerns about serious structural defects. Defects have already been found in a number of schools built by Western Building Systems. Over half a million households in rural Ireland are missing out on broadband because of a disastrous privatisation policy. Up to 1999, the telephone network was run by a state company, Telecom Eireann. But the Fianna Fail government decided to copy Margaret Thatcher and sell it off. Ever since then, disaster has piled on disaster. Instead of providing long term investment to install broad band, a series of private owners simply asset stripped the company, which had been re-named Eircom. read full story / add a comment

Internal memos from the HSE tell a shocking story of cover up and wilful endangering of lives. A memo from March 2016 shows that audits on cervical screening tests began in 2010 but it was only six years later, that the HSE noted that ‘the process is reaching the stage of communicating individual case reports’. The Workers’ Party has said that the scale of voluntary redundancies announced today (Thursday) by Eir, are further proof of the failure of privatisation in the telecoms sector. Commenting on today’s announcement, Workers’ Party Cllr. Éilis Ryan said: “The redundancies at Eir are just further proof that privatisation of Telecom Éireann was only ever about one thing – reducing the quality and number of jobs in the company. “Eir’s workforce today is around 3,000 workers. This is less than a quarter of Telecom Éireann’s pre-privatisation workforce.
