Ógra Shinn Féin notes with disappointment the acceptance of the Towards 2016 partnership agreement by ICTU yesterday. We feel that this agreement, and indeed the very concept of the social partnership model, fails young people. It will only serve to weaken unions, leading to the ability of unscrupulous employers to exploit young workers. read full story / add a comment

I. Introduction: This report is not constitutionally required of any non-sabbatical member of the Union Executive. I have compiled as an example of how easy it is to comply with the wishes of those students who proposed the draft Union constitutions of February 2004 and February 2005. These documents both contained the proposal for each member of the Union Executive to produce an end of year report which would include a continuity section to as a written guide of action for their successors. I hope that this report serves a guide or small piece of insight for all those contemplating involvement in an official capacity in the UCD STudents' Union Executive. read full story / add a comment

[BF, personal opinion: Check this out - USI, supposedly a "Union" to protect and advance student's rights as well as being an official affiliate of SIPTU charged with advancing trade union rights, when it's bosses weren't able to harass and bully this employee to their satisfaction, they suspended him without pay. If all the details of this case go public next month after the Rights Commissioner, it is going to have a devastating impact on those who still believe that the USI is a progressive social force in Ireland. To date The Examiner and Irish Indo have carried the story.] read full story / add a comment

PRESS STATEMENT, 21/7/06 ANTI-WAR IRELAND CRITICISES BERTIE AHERN MEETING WITH JEB BUSH Jeb Bush, governor of Florida and brother of the US president, arrived in Dublin this morning. He is to meet the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and will speak at a business function at 12.30pm in the Conrad Hotel at Earlsfort Terrace. Anti-war activists will stage a protest outside the hotel during the Jeb Bush event. Anti-War Ireland, which organised the protest at Shannon airport when his brother visited in 2004, believes that Jeb Bush should be left in no doubt about the depth of opposition in Ireland to his support for the war on Iraq and Afghanistan. read full story / add a comment

national / environment / press release Monday July 17, 2006 11:29 by Friends of the Earth

Friends of the Earth has described the government's climate pollution plan, published on Friday, as " the ultimate stealth tax". It will cost the public at least €2 million a week according to the environmental justice group. The EPA plan estimates the rise in Ireland's greenhouse gas emissions will be twice what is allowed under the Kyoto Protocol from 2008 to 2012 or, put another way, an average of 7 million tonnes of excess pollution a year[1]. Every tonne of this overshoot will have to be offset by an emissions permit. The government is assuming permit prices will remain steady at around €15 a tonne giving a total cost to Ireland of €105 million a year or €2 million a week for five years[2]. Commenting on how government inaction will cost the consumer and the taxpayer, Friends of the Earth Director, Oisin Coghlan said: "This is the ultimate stealth tax. The government has replaced the polluter-pays principle with the public-pays principle. On the one hand industry will get their pollution permits for free but raise consumer prices to reflect their value [3]. On the other hand the government will use taxpayers' money to buy permits for the rest of our Kyoto overshoot. It's a double whammy for the average household." read full story / add a comment ![]()
