7 March 2006 This week campaigners from Animal Rights Action Network (ARAN) will be at stalls in Belfast, Dublin, Limerick and Clare urging locals to help bring about the end of animal circuses. A giant ADI/ARAN billboard van will be touring Ireland highlighting the suffering of circus animals as part of an ongoing Irish campaign, which has already attracted much attention. The protest will highlight the dangers that animal acts pose to humans and animals alike: Date: Friday, March, 3 Time: 12 noon sharp Place: Start of Cruises Street (Opposite HMV Music Store) Recently animal protection group Animal Defenders International revealed for the first time ever their findings of an undercover investigation into several Irish circuses in Ireland including Duffy’s Circus. The campaign report on Ireland's circuses is based on undercover investigations by ADI Field Officers into seven circuses touring Ireland in 2000 and 2003. ADI Field Officers obtained employment with two Irish circuses, and observed many more. Examples of the violence used to control the animals were captured in the Irish launch video: * a camel slapped in the face and then hit in the face with a broom and finally jabbed with a broom handle * an elephant kicked in the leg and then punched in the face * a hippo whipped to hurry it along when it was already walking in the desired direction * a keeper whipping an elephant in order to get her to move * a baby camel being roughly handled to force him to move * a pregnant camel performing just days before giving birth read full story / add a comment

The recent controversy over some caricatures of Mohammed gave the Islamists an opportunity to wage a hysterical protest internationally. In many cases, this took a violent form and was clearly aimed at silencing those who dared to even portray Mohammed. In these demonstrations - across the world and in London, the very heart of Europe - many of the banners on show were emblazoned with shameful slogans. These included - “Those who insult Islam must be beheaded” and “Freedom go to hell” plus various other fatwa’s and threats against cartoonists and others who have the temerity to “insult” Islam. This is not the first time these forces have attacked people’s rights in the Middle East and Europe. Many writers, singers, even barbers and doctors have been targeted in the last 30 years let alone the enslavement of women in the Middle East under the pretext of the defence of the ‘honour’ of Islam. The furore over these caricatures is simply an excuse to stage another worldwide campaign to attack the right of freedom of expression. The attack on the prophet of Islam is condemned in its totality and the violence that ensued is also condemned. The mockery of the holocaust is equally condemned. We call on Muslims to end the violence immediately. We are hurt but we are not angry because the Prophet (pbuh) instructed us to control our anger.
