Make insult history march

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Friday February 10, 2006 01:14author by Sheikh Dr. Shaheed Satardien Report this post to the editors

No to prophet bashing. No to holocaust bashing. No to violence

The attack on the prophet of Islam is condemned in its totality and the violence that ensued is also condemned. The mockery of the holocaust is equally condemned. We call on Muslims to end the violence immediately. We are hurt but we are not angry because the Prophet (pbuh) instructed us to control our anger. The strongest person is the one who can control his anger the Prophet is reported to have said.

Press statement

A big Thank You to the Irish, UK and USA media

MARCH TO MAKE 'INSULT' HISTORY

Muslims of Dublin will march to thank the Irish, UK and USA print and broadcast (RTE, TV3, SKYNEWS and CNN) media for not publishing the cartoons which villified the prophet of Islam.

On: Friday 10th February At: 2:30 PM

Where: From the Pakistani shop in Clanbrassil Street (Off South Circular Road, to St. Stephen's Green Dublin where prominent Muslim Leaders will give speeches.

United Message:

The first message that we want to send to the country is that of the legitimate voice of the Muslim community (as opposed to those that hijacked last week's demonstration outside the Danish embassy in London). We condemn in the strongest sense the vicious rhetoric and un-Islamic slogans that were used by misguided and angry Muslims. Although we are hurt by the cartoons, we condemn the violence which followed it across the world. We are people of peace and are trying to do our best in bridging the gap between Islam and the West therefore we thank the Irish media for not publishing these offensive pictures and unintelligible cartoons.

Secondly, to Europe, the lesson from the cartoon is not that Western newspapers come under the fold of Islamic law. It is actually that 'Islam-o-phobic caricatures are unacceptable, irresponsible, and lead to a more polarised world. Jewish leaders and prominent figures like Bill Clinton have likened it to the characterisation of Jews over the centuries. We know that it has ended up in the extermination of more than six million Jews. We are not against freedom of speech but we encourage free speech without vilification.

Thirdly, to the Muslim world, we wish to send a message of calm. It may appear to them that there is a great Western conspiracy against their faith, but there are a large number of people who are on the side of reconciliation, and we hope that comes out loud and clear on Friday.

Fourthly, we do not under any circumstances condone the mocking of any people. The actions of the Iranian daily newpaper who wish to mock the holocaust are distasteful and we call upon the paper to stop the competition forthwith.

one link is to the organisation "faith based" and the other is to wikipedia. One of the cartoons has been reproduced here, in context by which it is clear no offence is meant, but the reproduction is only meant to illustrate to Irish and non-muslim readers the nature of the insult. It is the least offensive of all the 12 images and purports to depict the prophet (PBUH) as being "explosive". The author of the article and majority of comments accepts responsibility for any offence caused, and asks before judgement be passed that all links and statements in that article be read.

I'd ask those attending the march to note that this crises which has seen lives lost has been stoked by the states of Iran and Denmark equally.

"sheik"

how did you earn such a title in the first place?

i hope you will come on indymedia seeing as you have used it to spread details of your march.

What is your position on lesbians and gays? do you believe that they should face death?
what other penalties should they face? are you prepared to condemn the imposition of sharia law in islamic countries?

what is your position on women? should all women be forced to wear the hijab? should adulterous women be whipped or stoned to death? will you condemn the whipping and stoning of women in islamic countries?

under sharia law, a woman who has been raped, must produce 4 adult male muslims to prove her innocence.do you support this provision of islamic law?

it would be interesting to see sharia law clarified on indymedia so that we can all see how merciful and compassionate allah is.

ps why is the banana the forbidden fruit in the koran? anything to do with the shape?

"Emma, Ann and a sex doll that upsets Muslims
* The latest public figure to stand accused of defiling the Prophet Mohamed is not some Danish cartoonist, or French newspaper editor, but a hapless British Page 3 girl called Emma B.

Yesterday, the erotic retailer Ann Summers unveiled Miss B as the "face" of its new range of products. Not 24 hours later, she finds herself on the front line of Islamic protest after Muslim leaders discovered that the range includes a new blow-up doll, called "Mustafa Shag".

Unfortunately, Mustafa was one of the names given to the Prophet Mohamed. Bestowing it upon, in the words of its catalogue, "an inflatable escort for your hen-night adventures" is considered highly offensive.

The Manchester Central Mosque has already written to the firm, calling on it to withdraw the product, right. "You have no idea how much hurt, anguish, and disgust this obnoxious phrase ["Mustafa Shag"] has caused to Muslim men, women and children," reads their letter. ""

what next? that one really gave me a laugh! i'm not trying to take a rise out of the prophet, honestly!

what i find really hard to understand is this idea of free speech without insult. In Ireland people have a wide range of attitudes towards a wide range of issues, and it goes without saying that everyone is insulted by the views and opinions of other people. For example, Eoghan Harris made some remarks the other night about 1916 that i didn't like and i'm sure many people were insulted by them. But thats freespeech for you. Freespeech co-exists with insult unless the society in question is single minded.

whenever we have free speech an the freedom of movement within society some people are going to object, their objection is the proof of a free society.

Pat C you are out of line.
It seems that you did not
even bother to read the statement
that was made by Sheikh (which means that
he is a qualified theologian) Dr. Shaheed Satardien.
He, in all fairness, knows that you lefties are in
bed with the muslim extremists. However, as a moderate muslim he still publishes his statement
to reach the fundamentalists (who are your buddies) especially in the anti-war issues.
Sheikh Dr. Shaheed Satardien is a very courageous person and we should commend him
for his stand. Sheikh Satardien is like a ray of light

Where were your buddies in Fosis and Clonskeagh mosque and South Circular road mosque and the Muslim Association of Ireland?

Why did they not march with these people?
Because they did not want to be violent?

Unlike your muslim "brothers" in the Middle East who have vowed to cut Westerners to pieces for insulting the alleged Prophet Muhammed, a individual who may or may not have existed hundreds of years ago, you have condemned violence.
Protest all you but quite frankly I don't care how offended you are by a bunch of cartoons.

An interesting article below on antisemitic publications available in the Arab world. Full article at link.

"Blatantly anti-Semitic literature is on sale in Cairo, just like many other Arab capitals. The BBC News website's Martin Patience reports on the apparent inconsistency in the Egyptian reaction to the Danish cartoons caricaturing the Prophet Muhammad.

Two hundred metres from the Arab League's headquarters in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, there are two newspaper kiosks on the pavement. Passing customers can also buy books - trashy romance novels, computer guidebooks, and children's story books.

But on closer inspection, both kiosks openly stock the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a notorious anti-Semitic text that purports to be an account of Jewish plans to rule the world, but was actually written by Tsarist secret police in 1905.

They also sell Hitler's autobiography, Mein Kampf. "

Who do you think you are Pat C? You set yourself up as judge jury and executioner on various issues based on your seemingly impenetrable assumption that you are 100% right in all you say, do and think. In reality, sadly, you are equipped with very little more than your own insufferable self-righteousness which renders you incapable of any kind of subtle thinking. You dont have to go to Islam, incidentally, for examples of violence and injustice against women or gays - lamentable and inexcusable though some Islamic attitudes are. Just as there are extreme forms of Islam there are extreme and violent forms of atheism, capitalism, socialism, and communism. Muslim people have no monopoly on human failing - a very obvious truth but one which continually eludes you, nevertheless. Your attempt to caricature this moderate muslim for a clearly peaceful and rational response to recent events is idiotic and unpleasant. Did you know, by the way, that gay people are as much responsible for violence and corruption as any other group? I'm sure that your shrill harangues will do nothing for the cause of women or gays - larded in juvenile and unpleasant insults as they are.

"Who do you think you are Pat C? You set yourself up as judge jury and executioner on various issues based on your seemingly impenetrable assumption that you are 100% right in all you say, do and think. "

no. i am expressing an opinion. its muslims and some trots who think what they say is divine scripture.

"In reality, sadly, you are equipped with very little more than your own insufferable self-righteousness which renders you incapable of any kind of subtle thinking."

so yo have set yourself up as judge jury and executioner and you have negated my right to have an opinion.

"You dont have to go to Islam, incidentally, for examples of violence and injustice against women or gays - lamentable and inexcusable though some Islamic attitudes are. "

yes but even among fundamentalist christians you wont find widespread agreement that gays and adulterous women should face death. belief in the sharia is accepted as valid even in mainstream islam.

"Just as there are extreme forms of Islam there are extreme and violent forms of atheism, capitalism, socialism, and communism. Muslim people have no monopoly on human failing - a very obvious truth but one which continually eludes you, nevertheless. "

again you strip me of the ability to make an informed comment.

"Your attempt to caricature this moderate muslim for a clearly peaceful and rational response to recent events is idiotic and unpleasant. "

no its not. this article was posted in the name of the sheik. why doesnt he answer my questions? why dont you answer my questions? abusing me by calling me an idiot and unpleasant is not an answer.

"Did you know, by the way, that gay people are as much responsible for violence and corruption as any other group? "

how do you reckon that? i'd love to know. do gays go around kicking straights to death for being straight? do they shout insults at straights for being straight?

i notice you decided not to attack women under that heading. wise decision on your part.

"I'm sure that your shrill harangues will do nothing for the cause of women or gays - larded in juvenile and unpleasant insults as they are. "

so standing up for womens and gay rights is juvenile, unpleasant and insulting. you really dont want want to upset your misogynistic, homophobic, antisemitic muslim friends do you?

just by virtue of being men have always enjoyed access to power and privilege on a scale even now unimaginable by the majority of women: - in politics, as property and wealth owners, through voting rights, as members of the judiciary, armed forces and professions, as priests and laymen - whatever. Neither are they, being mere human beings, immune to having prejudices of their own and among some gay men there is a virulently mysoginistic and contemptuous attitude towards women. Given the same degree of opportunity, no doubt women would be just as flawed. Gay men can be racist and violent like others. They have tortured and murdered. The very religions that you are being so abusive about have in many instances been a sort of refuge for gay men too - despite their hypocritical public stance on homosexuality. None of this is to suggest that gay men are more or less prone to foolishness or evil than the rest of us but only that there is no sense of proportion in your abusive tirades about the Muslim faith and the people who practice it. There are some despicable practices associated with Islam as there are with Christianity and non-religious movements too. Many moderate muslims abhor genital mutilation and the vilification of gay and lesbian people, for example. Many muslims are gay and lesbian themselves. People routinely blame religion for war but there has never been a war which was not actually about money and power. Religion has been (ab)used as a conveneint fig leaf behind which to hide these motives - to whip up misguided support among gullible people - often, tragically, the very people who are being asked to risk life and limb.

You dish it out Pat, but you can't take it, you know.

Dear Pat C
I am Sheikh Shaheed Satardien in person answering you. (Can you believe it?)
I do not normally answer to illogical rantings and ravings but I see that you are very much (mis) and (dis)informed.
You keep yourself like a person who knows Islam. Why don't you start reading up (on) Islam instead of hearing about Islam?
You will not be able to know Islam if you are going to listen to the mainstream media.
I posted on Indymedia because I believe in it. You obviously have not seen other posts of mine before. Why do you not inform yourself more about a person before you attack her or him? Why do you not (eg.) google my name and see what comes up and what type of person I am?(I write regularly for the metro eireann which is Ireland's only multi-cultural newspaper). Not knowing that proves that you do not read the paper which proves that you are not interested (as much as you might claim) in other cultures.
On radio Phoenix Fm there is a program called New Horizons which is presented by Dil (who is a lesbian). Ask her who gave her that position because they need a voice. (I did!). Does that give you some idea?
When you say hijab what is your understanding of it? A scarf, a veil or what else? You do not have the faintest idea of what exactly you are talking about, but your (Islamophobic) rantings are disgraceful.
In which country have you witnessed the stoning of women for being raped? If there is such a country then I will be the first to codemn it with the abhorrence which it deserves.
Where do you get this crazy idea of a woman having to prove her innocence by four men if she is raped?
I am a lecturer of World Cultures and I cannot verify your (unintelligible)claims. If you want to meet me and know more, then write to me at interfaithrt@gmail.com.
P.S. I did not answer you (partially) because I fear your stupid attacks on me. I am used to it and most of it comes from the so-called 'Muslim' community.
By the way, where did you get this stupid idea that bananas are forbidden fruit? We love bananas (and Islam is not that stupid). The stupidity falls on people like yourself who did not bother to find out about Islam but are still under the yoke of imperialist and oppressive orientalist portrayals of it. Liberate your mind and emancipate your heart and find out about it from qualified Sheikhs (like myself). If you want to know (more or anything) about the real (and genuine)Islam then you are welcome to send me an e-mail.

Hey Pat C I just googled Sheikh Shaheed Satardien's name and made a couple of phone calls to people who are involved in the Interfaith Roundtable. Sheikh Satardien is the most tolerant of Muslim (clerics)around in Ireland and in Europe. He is the only person who respects and deals with even the minority religions who are rejected by the established faiths.
Everyone I spoke to praises him and regards him as the most enlightened, fair and just reformist and progressive Muslim that we have seen in a long, long time. Even the humanists and atheists are respected by him and he works closely with them as well. This is just mud in your face and proves your Islamophobia and racism.
He champions the cause of muslim women and even lesbians and gays are his friends.
If I were you I would wish that the earth split up and form a big hole so that I could fall into it and then it should just cover up again.

It is to be much regretted that in all this sorry affair the one protest in Ireland which saw a "positive" message of solidarity and what in barcelona we term "convivencia" was not recorded here to its full potential. Perhaps you or your colleagues might have photographs and would consider publishing them here, and thus "feeding the trolls" less.

heres a piece on the sharia and rape. full article at link. let the sheik lie this away.

"The victim carries the burden of proof
In the case of rape it may thus happen - and in most cases this is what seems to happen - that the victim has to prove that she was raped. One can argue about moral attitudes. In our world it sometimes, too, is difficult to find a consensus of what is right and what is wrong. In the West, too, until a couple of years ago, a rape victim had difficulties to assert herself in court. As in: She must have provoked it with her behaviour. Here, too, there are contentious issues concerning the burden of proof and the rule of presumed innocence to the disadvantage of the victim. However, this does not lead to the death penalty for the women. And even, if one believes that s/he has the right to judge over the morality of someone else, the type of punishment, i.e. death by stoning, remains absolutely unacceptable. Regardless of the fact that it should be the rapist who should be punished in the first place, and not vice versa.

Shari'ah even prescribes the size of the stones with which the convict is to be killed: not too small, because then they would not cause death, but not to large either, because then the convict probably dies as soon as the first stone hits. By the way, the Qur'an does not even have that kind of punishment for adultery: The Qur'an speaks of 100 lashes and that is that, though cruel enough (see Sura 24,2 and 24,3).

At the beginning of 2002, four stoning verdicts against women in Islamic states were announced: two in Nigeria, one in Sudan and one in Pakistan. Each woman had been charged with adultery. "

i'm one person honestly. why not try some constructive discussion of the points i make. you could try dealing with tthe rape piece above.

and \heres more.

Sex and Rape
• The Sharia mandates severe punishment for sex outside marriage
•.. but allows a man to have unlimited sex with an unlimited number of slave girls and war captives

• In rape cases, the burden of proof is on the victim
• The testimonies of four independent, male, Muslim witnesses are needed to prove rape
• Unproved rape is fornication, punishable by stoning

‘The Sharia is the only system of law which punishes the victim’

Yesterday I informed on a development when the president of the EU parliament, Solano promised legislation based on the declaration of human rights proscribing religious hatred whislt speaking to the global Islamic conference. Solano of course is a Catalan Socialist, the same day Zapatero met with the Islamic congress of Spain, one of the states of Europe with the highest number of muslim citizens and one of the few that borders the islamic world. http://www.indymedia.ie/article/74056?&condense_comment...38279 They expressed their ful lsupport for his "alliance of civilisation" thing, http://www.indymedia.ie/article/70873 and also met with one of the leaders of the Catalan right wing CiUopposition party Mr Duran i Lleida. The CiU who ruled Catalonia for 23 years swerving into and out of support of whomever was in Madrid, are at heart a "faith based" organisation. But are arguing for parallel legislation to balance "freedom of speech" with "religious hatred". Important steps by the lawyers of Europe. This morning the muslims thus joined other "faithbased" parties in adding their names to full page adverts criticising the "Catalan estatut" not for linguistic or national grounds but for "faith" grounds, campaiging _democratically_ against gay marriage, abortion, and "the right to die with dignity" and the "secular" project. http://www.indymedia.ie/article/72240 That is jolly great progress. That is what we are all about.

"1. Denmark should appologize from Muslims for published cartoons."

no way. freedom of speech.

"2. Make a Law about it that noone never dare to do same against any relegion."

all religions are invented and should be mocked.

"3. Banned on all newspapers and banned on writers, publishers and editors which mistake such as ."

now thats a little bit undemocratic.

we have few freedoms under capitalism. those we have are precious. if you dont like those freedoms then you should move to an islamic country.

the same goes for the sheik, his female supporters, leo and shay shag. if you dont like freedom then move to an islamic country.

i believe in an opendoor immigration policy and i also believe in an opendoor emigration policy. so bye bye.

just remember: Religion Is Not Race.

it is not racist to criticise or mock islam.

i am an anti racist and anti fascist. its easy to call me a racist in the anonymity of indy, why not come and say it to my face?

Why wont the Sheik defend women against rapists, why did he lie about the Sharia originally. Islam is evil and is Anti-Women.

Susan my dear let me remind you that there are more cases of women abuse and wife battering amongst us than there are in Muslim homes.
The Muslims are not binge drinkers and drug addicts nor do they chase after every skirt.
At least they treat their women with dignity and respect and treasure them like diamonds. And not like our women are being treated like pieces of meat.
Let us look at ourselves and then point fingers at others,
By the way, there are more rape cases in our society than in Islamic societies.
Check the stats girl. Why don't you get a life?
Your hatred for Islam is too obvious.
The Sheikh is too dignified to answer you it seems and I admire him for that.

its odd that you should mention rape in the home, islam recognises no such thing. under the islamic sharia a woman is the property of her husband and rape cannot take place within a marriage.

i find it strange that you have not dealt with the information regarding the sharia and rape at the links i supplied. the sheik has been exposed as a liar. or prerhaps you think it is the human rights organisations that are telling the lies?

Will this "MARCH TO MAKE 'INSULT' HISTORY" include a call to the muslim/islamic world to quit calling all who reside in the West infidels?
Every time I hear them using that word to describe me I feel insulted.

We're infidels and they have no sense of humour.

the march was rather funny in some respects. there was a picture in the irish times of a marcher holding a placard which read "islam means peace", his face was contorted with hate/rage/anger and his clenched fist was in the air! no doubt he was screaming about the mercy and compassion of allah.
