Last Monday, the Orange Order blatantly ignored the wishes of the vast majority of Ardoyne residents to march through our community twice. The secterian organisation also discounted advice from, the RUC/PSNI, Clergy, Politicians, Residents Groups, Community Leaders and Journalists that if they stormed ahead. This procession would undoubtably lead to inevitable violence and set community relations back years. On July 1, 2010 the special police branch of the Indian state assassinated in cold blood, Azad, (Cherukuri Rajkumar) the spokesperson of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) having earlier forcefully abducted him and Hem Chandra Pandey, a freelance journalist accompanying him. Both were tortured and executed and their bodies dropped and left in a distant forest. AFAR would like to condemn yet again the keeping of wild animals in captivity for entertainment purposes. The 10 year old Penguin stolen from the Zoo and dumped in the City centre is yet another example of the dangers posed to wild animals by Zoos. Zoos are a remnant of bygone days and merely a continuation of the outdated Victorian menageries of the past. They serve no purpose other than that of commercial gain. read full story / add a comment

The Secret lives and deaths of 60,000 Irish hunt dogs? The Irish Hunters are so paranoid regarding the inspections related to the upcoming Dog Breeding Bill ,that we in the AOHS have decided to try and count the numbers of hounds that Hunts have and that are relevant to this legislation, these dogs would currently be residing in Irish hunt kennels. Having read the quote from Chairman of the HAI Gavin Duffy that ‘’60,000 hounds’’ resided here. He quoted this figure at a recent Navan HAI protest meeting a few months ago. We decided to gather the facts printed in the hunts own publications to verify this figure. read full story / add a comment

Despite a 150,000 petition collected by patients and their families and extensive lobbying including a facebook campaign, government TDs would not accept amendments from Labour and FG which would have protected St Luke's and retained it as a public cancer hospital. Despite being on record as supporting the campaign to save St Luke's, John Gormley did not even appear at the Dail debate while constituency collegues Ruairi Quinn and Lucinda Creighton spoke up for St Luke's. According to reports received by “Human Rights and Democracy activists of Iran Roya Samadi, daughter-in-law of Mansour Osanloo, president of the board of directors of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, was kidnapped and savagely tortured by three agents of Intelligence Ministry. On Wednesday 2nd of Tir (June 23, 2010) Ms. Samadi, while going home from work around 5:30PM, was attacked by three men as soon as she got off the metro train in Karaj. The agents grabbed her by hair and while pulling her by her hair were kicking and punching her. All of this in broad day light in front of all other shocked commuters. Ms. Samadi while crying for help kept repeating that she's Mr. Osanloo's daughter-in-law. On Sunday June 27 the President of Republican Sinn Féin Des Dalton and its Patron Ruairí Ó Brádaigh visited Maghaberry prison. Despite assurances by the Northern Ireland Prison Service the Duty Governor failed to meet Des Dalton and Ruairí Ó Brádaigh. However they did meet with the OC of the Republican prisoners. The purpose of the proposed meeting with the Duty Governor was to put forward the 5 demands of the Republican prisoners for political status as well as to highlight the internment of veteran Republican and political hostage Martin Corey. 50 Irish farming, food and environmental organisations and businesses sent a letter yesterday (24 June) to the Irish Agriculture Minister, Brendan Smith, asking him to block the European Commission’s latest move to force the approval of more GM crops for cultivation at EU level. Michael O’Callaghan of the GM-free Ireland Network said failure to do so will make it impossible for the Irish Government to implement its policy to ban field trials and cultivation of GM crops in the Republic, and also weaken the credibility of the Government’s proposed voluntary GM-free label that would provide Irish farmers and food producers with a competitive advantage in the global export markets. read full story / add a comment
