The Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) has written to management of Glenveagh National Park expressing its concern that large areas of sensitive habitat are being destroyed illegally and for commercial purposes. The Park, which is one of only six in Ireland and is home to rare species such as the Golden Eagle, Red Grouse and Red Deer is of immense biodiversity, landscape and economic value. The IWT surveyed four areas in October of this year where machines were being used to extract large volumes of turf on a commercial scale. There is also extensive illegal dumping of tyres and household debris within the boundary of the Park. New drains have been created, designed to dry out the blanket bog habitat to facilitate turf extraction. Blanket bog is a priority habitat under the EU Habitats Directive and the affected areas lie not only in the National Park but within zones designated as Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area. The IWT believes that this is occurring without any regulation or controls but has asked the NPWS to clarify this. To-date we have received no response. In addition, blanket bog habitats lie outside the scope of the much discussed Management and Restoration Plan being discussed by the Peatlands Council (dedicated to midland raised bogs only). read full story / add a comment

A Riot of Our Own: A Symposium on The Clash in Belfast: Call for Papers University of Ulster, Belfast Campus, Northern Ireland June 20-21 2014 In the 1970s, with the Troubles at their height, touring musicians were usually unwilling to play in Northern Ireland. One of the few international acts prepared to break what was in effect the cultural boycott of the region was The Clash. In October 1977, the iconic punk band was scheduled to open the Get Out of Control tour with a concert in the Ulster Hall in Belfast city centre. A few hours before the group was due to take the stage, however, the gig was cancelled for reasons that remain disputed and sparking chaotic scenes that are often recalled as amounting to a ‘riot’. Shortly before Christmas, The Clash made good on their promise to return to Belfast and played a legendary concert in the McMordie Hall at Queen’s University. read full story / add a comment

Cuba Support Group Ireland is pleased to announce the dates and venues of a nationwide speaking tour by Canadian academic and author, Keith Bolender, a world expert on the blockade of Cuba. His talk will be based on his latest book, Cuba Under Siege: American Policy, the Revolution and Its People. In it, Bolender explores how Cuban society has been affected by 50 years of ‘non stop hostility from the world’s most powerful nation’. He offers extensive historical analysis, firsthand interviews and expert comment. Most significantly, perhaps, Bolender puts the blockade of Cuba into the historical military context of the tactic of siege and analyses the psychological impacts of this on the besieged population, with some remarkable insights from historical parallels. Through this contextualisation, the potential of American policy to deliver its stated intentions is evaluated with uncomfortable conclusions for policy makers. read full story / add a comment

Ireland could and should have a Universal Pension for everyone over 65. it could be paid for principally by standard rating the current tax-break for private pensions. More than 80% of benefit of the current tax break goes to the 20% with highest earnings. A Universal Pension would be simpler, fairer and more just as well as being sustainable in the decades ahead. No existing pensioner would lose out and many would experience an increase in the Universal Pension. In particular, those adults aged 66 years and older, in respect of whom reduced payments are now made due to their status as ‘Qualified Adults’, would receive a Universal Pension in their own right. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In 2012 the attempt by the government to Quebec to introduce a 75% fee hike was defeated by the organisation of a mass student strike that lasted over 6 months. That fee increase was part of the global process of imposing the privatisation and commodification of education. Since the victory, organisers of the strike have been being doing speaking tours to aid the process whereby "youth and students everywhere are becoming increasingly conscious of the need to organize as a means to defend education as a social right". In September this tour reaches Ireland where we need to hear how a sustained and militant student movement that can win is built. read full story / add a comment

The recent use of chemical weapons in Damascus is without a doubt an appalling atrocity causing untold damage to human life and creating panic in the area. There can be no doubt that this was a horrifying attack which increases the already high death toll of over 100,000 people with over 1 million people displaced so far. At this point there is no definitive evidence as to who carried out this attack. As UN inspectors continue their investigation in Damascus, the US and her allies move closer to a military intervention into Syria. It is now being reported that the evidence of the Assad regime’s use of chemical weapons has been supplied by Israeli military intelligence. Reminiscent of the Blair/Bush Weapons of Mass Destruction excuse for intervention, this convenient intelligence escalates the likelihood of a US military intervention in Syria. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The bloody dissolution of the sit-ins in Al-Nahda Square and Raba'a al-Adawiyya is nothing but a massacre—prepared in advance. It aims to liquidate the Muslim Brotherhood. But, it is also part of a plan to liquidate the Egyptian Revolution and restore the military-police state of the Mubarak regime. The Revolutionary Socialists did not defend the regime of Mohamed Mursi and the Muslim Brotherhood for a single day. We were always in the front ranks of the opposition to that criminal, failed regime which betrayed the goals of the Egyptian Revolution. It even protected the pillars of the Mubarak regime and its security apparatus, armed forces and corrupt businessmen. We strongly participated in the revolutionary wave of 30 June. Neither did we defend for a single day the sit-ins by the Brotherhood and their attempts to return Mursi to power. read full story / add a comment
