Around a thousand marched on Saturday in Dublin on the 16th to demand the freeing of Marian Price, currently 18 months in in solitary confinement in British custody in the Six Counties. Tensions were high due to the recent Gardaí raids on republicans in parts of Dublin and Louth, including the arrests of the mother and two brother of a republican. In addition a heavy Garda presence at the start of the march, along with their taking names and addressses of some marchers, boded ill for the event. However, it passed peacefully. The marchers, led by the banner of the Dublin Free Marian Price Commitee, started from the Garden of Remembrance and as the lead banner and the Pride of Erin flute band from Portadown stepped on to O’Connell Bridge, the end of the march was just setting foot on to the far end of O’Connell Street. read full story / add a comment

Animal welfare groups are calling on Kilflynn Coursing Club in County Kerry to disband, or, if it does not do so voluntarily, that it be compelled to disband by the governing body of live hare coursing in Ireland. The Kilflynn coursing event is scheduled to be the second fixture of the new hare coursing season that begins at the end of this month. read full story / add a comment

He writes: The Freedom Theatre in Jenin, a symbol of Palestinian culture, saw its artistic director, Juliano Meir-Khamis murdered by unknown assassins last year. Almost certainly the work of Israel and PA, both have used the murder to further harass the Freedom Theatre. Zubeidi has been imprisoned, without trial for nearly 4 months by the Israeli owned and funded quisling Palestinian Authority of Abbas. This is the context in which a cultural boycott of Israel is being advocated in Britain against groups like Batsheva. Please act on this appeal. On the 9th of September Zakaria Zubeidi announced that he will embark on a death fast, a complete food and fluid strike, in response to the continuous postponement of his release from Palestinian Authority prison. This effectively means that unless the Palestinian Authority releases Zakaria he will most probably not make it through the week. read full story / add a comment

A report released on Monday raises concerns that an animal handler working for Courtney Brothers’ Circus, which has travelled the length and breadth of the country this year, was allowed to bypass EU animal health regulations when importing four Asian elephants currently being used in the circus’ shows. The European Commission has confirmed that regulations are in place to prevent the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease. read full story / add a comment

Older & Bolder is calling on Minister James Reilly TD to reverse the cuts to Home Care Services announced yesterday by the HSE. Ms. Patricia Conboy, Director of Older & Bolder said: “We want to remind Minister Reilly of his own words in opposition in 2010 when he highlighted what was wrong with the HSE approach to cost-cutting. With the Non-Aligned Movement meeting this week in Tehran, Veterans For Peace is urging the organization of 120 nations not formally allied with any major power bloc to take steps to deter the Israeli-American threats of war against Iran over its nuclear enrichment program. From: Veterans For Peace This is an urgent appeal from Veterans For Peace. We are an organization of U.S. veterans formed in 1985 to try to bring an end to war. VFP is a non-profit organization recognized by the UN as an NGO. We are appealing to the leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement to do everything in your power to head off a military attack on Iranin the coming weeks. Israel’s leaders regard the period between now and the U.S. election on November 6 as the most opportune time to virtually guarantee U.S. support for such an attack. On Wednesday 11th July 2012 further truths were revealed regarding endemic corruption in the planning process. The Mahon tribunal revelations were only the tip of the iceberg and did nothing to resolve some serious issues. Minister Phil Hogan has a lot of work to do to clean up the planning process. in fact the minister for justice will also need to make sweeping changes too. read full story / add a comment

The Iran Tribunal - convened to put the Tehran regime in the dock for its massacre of 5,000-10,000 political prisoners in 1988 - took place in London over June 18-22. While it largely went unnoticed by the public in Britain, it caused uproar amongst sections of the Iranian left. The tribunal was not the first well-financed attempt to divert the genuine anger of the Iranian people, and their hatred of the Islamic regime (in its many factions), towards dubious ends. Similar stunts have taken place before under the auspices of so-called NGOs - which turn out to be little more than fronts for the United States and the European Union. read full story / add a comment

On June 12th a group of over 10 local white residents stormed onto the property of the Oliver family home, shouting racial epithets and demanding that the family hand over Eric Oliver’s 16-year-old friend Mikey Vasquez. The family refused and came under assault by the white mob, Eric came to his family’s defense and drove the mob away. The defeated mob members called the police to continue the attack on Eric Oliver. While Oliver was initially held on $100,000 bond, no arrests were made of the more than 10 white people who intruded onto the Oliver family’s property and assaulted its inhabitants. Police refused to take statements from neighbors who witnessed the attack. This Saturday July 7th, community members and activists will march in Bronson, Florida to demand justice for Eric Oliver. read full story / add a comment |
