offsite link The Truth About Britain?s Wildfires Thu Aug 21, 2025 15:00 | Paul Homewood
It is simplistic to blame the recent spike in wildfires on climate change, writes Paul Homewood. A more likely cause is the rewilding of uplands, supposedly to cut carbon emissions, and poor management of forested land.

Friends of the Earth has written to European environment ministers in advance of their arrival in Montreal calling on them to rethink the EU's negotiating strategy. The current approach risks the climate talks drifting into a dead end.

Minister Dick Roche, who has delayed his departure for Montreal until after the budget, received the letter on Tuesday afternon.

Oisin Coghlan, Friends of the Earth Director in Ireland, said

“The EU’s Environment Ministers must not forget that Europe has sent them to Montreal to secure a robust framework for negotiations to win the battle against global climate change. Their negotiators, who have been in Montreal for more than a week now, have instead prioritised an agreement that is acceptable to the Bush Administration. But the US negotiators have made clear they will water any deal down to voluntary action or nothing, making it worth less than the paper it's written on.” read full story / add a comment

The parents of the Danish soldier killed in Iraq, Bjarke Kirkmand, sue the Danish Prime Minister for breach of the constitution in connection with Denmark's participation in the war against Iraq.

This development is of enormous significance, because the plaintiffs have clearly suffered loss through the decision to send Denmark to war in Iraq - their son was killed in the course of the war. Thus, the courts cannot refuse to accept the case at all, as they might have been tempted to do in the case brought some weeks ago by a group of concerned citizens. read full story / add a comment
