Update 25th April: The Indymedia email server continues to be out of action which means notifications are not working and emails cannot be sent through the site contact form. We are working to get this system back in place.
We are in need of money once again to pay our website hosting bill which is due in mid April and now to cover the cost of the replacement of some hardware. We have set a target of €2000 as that is the amount needed per year to keep going. We are appealing to you the public to help out no matter how small a donation you can make.

The tax protests back in the 70s and 80s proved futile when it came to ordinary working people being heard by their government. In reality the only thing that really happened on those occasions was that working people lost a day's pay. Mass demonstration in Ireland achieves nothing. It is seen as a way for working people and the unemployed to let off a bit of steam so that everything can move along as it was. The trade union movement has not seen or has deliberately avoided other forms of demonstration beyond mass demonstration. The time for change has come, mass demonstration is no longer a proven method of having the will of the people upheld by their political representatives. ts time for change. read full story / add a comment

With less than a week to go before more than one million people will be hauled into court for breaking the law the Household Charge protest hs taken one more step closer to success. The only people who believe this tax is justifable are the same people who can well afford to pay this tax. While this government squeezes more and more out of the people politicians like Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore give themselves pay rises to compensate them for losses they incured through their so-called ''we are all in this together' cry of unity. Should one million people refuse to pay the cahrge before the deadline of the 31st Match, then this must be seen a s a sign of no confidence in this government and Irish politicians in general. read full story / add a comment

The Ballyphehane and South Parish CAHWT local groups expressed their outrage at being berated in the media by the government TD for their democratic preference in boycotting this unjust and regressive form of taxation. It gives an insight to the real views of the SWP on a number of issues including the ULA and the CAHWT. What assistance will be available if we now need to upgrade our systems, despite having complied by the rules that the institutions of state set previously? Instead of answering these questions, Minister Phil Hogan has introduced draconian legislation which dictates that householders will be dragged through the courts and may be fined up to €5,000 if they cannot comply with his secret standards. The response to the legislation on household tax has been very encouraging. A poll taken on Sunday by Newstalk after the launch of the campaign opposing the tax, showed over 70% indicated opposition and a determination not to pay. This is a great start to what will be one of the dominant campaigns in 2012. There will be a consistent and vicious propaganda campaign by the establishment which has already begun. There will be intimidation and pressure on people who can face massive fines if they refuse to register for this charge before the end of March. read full story / add a comment

I fully support Independent TD Thomas Pringle's call on people to support a campaign not to pay this hideous Household Charge (Poll Tax!!!). Mr Pringle says he will not register for the tax, nor will he pay it. Well done Thomas Pringle :-) At last we have we have some principled TDs in An Dáil Éireann who are prepared to suffer personally for their beliefs they know are in Our Country's And People's best interests. read full story / add a comment

The ruling class strategy of making working people pay for the crisis has seen public and private sector pay cuts, job losses, welfare reductions and slashing of important services like special needs assistants for children with physical and mental problems. Yet another provo leaves party, admits that provisionalism is about administrating British rule in Ireland. Some say no one could have "predicted" the manner in which the provos have turned. However Republicans at the time of the 1986 split correctly "mapped" the future of the provosionals using proir history.
