Jump To Comment: 1 2 3Our family here in Gort, Co.Galway had the privilege of hosting cyclists who came from Madrid in solidarity with the people of Erris and Merthyr. Their spirit aligned with the spirit of the people of Glengad, Kilcommon, Rossport and surrounding areas is quite infectious and it is a spirit that will not be broken.
It has been said that the music and song and laughter outside Castlerea Prison was responded to with a defiant roar by Pat O'Donnell and Niall Harnett!
Let that visceral echo reverberate across this country and the world because, make no mistake, the people of Ireland must wake up to what is happening with the Corrib Gas Project...for it concerns each and every one of us on a profound human level.
Madrid, Merthyr, Mayo ABU
I guess all of us involved in the Shell to Sea campaign owe a debt of gratitude to the Merthyr to Mayo and the Madrid to Mayo cyclists for the outstanding work they've done in publicising the respective struggles against exploitative, corrupt and damaging energy projects in Spain, Wales and Ireland. I daresay their fleeting presence in cities, towns and villages on their way helped more people to find out more about how the oil, coal and nuclear industries go about their dirty business, and brought a spark of colour and extra life everywhere they went. Like all the other campaigners before who have made enormous sacrifices of time, work, money and personal liberty along the way while we have struggled against these iniquitous projects, the cyclists are due a big big Thank You from me, and other Shell to Sea campaigners I'm sure. Now go and have a ball of a time at the Solidarity Gathering - you surely deserve it!
What a cheerful way to protest outside the prison, with singing, dancing and speeches. Lovely batch of photos. I'm so glad the Merthyr cyclists and others were given the warm reception they earned.
