Gaza Still Under Siege

Derry Rally Marks Anniversary of Israel's Assault on Gaza - in solidarity with those trying to break the siege.

A rally, organised by Derry Anti-War Coalition (DAWC), was held in the centre of Derry's walled city on Sunday 27th December 09. It marked the anniversary of Israel's assault on Gaza and expressed solidarity with those trying to break the ongoing siege of the Palestinian population of Gaza.

Speaking to the crowd Eamonn McCann of the DAWC spoke of the grossly disproportionate force used by Israel military killing 1400 Palestinians and destroying the infrastructure and the mediaeval-type siege being waged on Gaza by Israel both before and since the military assault.

Five men from Derry are curently participating in the Viva Palestina convoy to Gaza. Speaking of how the aid convoy is being delayed by the Egyptian government, McCann went on to say:

"The position the convoy has been placed in is disgraceful. The DAWC is proud of the effort we put in to buy and fill the ambulance and of our five Derry representatives who are with the convoy. The people of Derry can be proud of the support they gave us in our fund raising for the convoy over the past six months. We want to ensure now that the people of Gaza receive the aid which has been sent from Derry as from towns and cities all over these islands and further afield."

He went on to urge all political representatives to make their voices heard and asked individuals to contact the Egyptian embassies at Dublin 6606718 or 6606566 or via consular@embegyptireland.ie The London embassy can be contacted at 020-7499-3304.

Derry Anti-War Coalition will be holding a candlelit vigil for Gaza in the Diamond at 4pm on Thursday 31st. All supporters in the north west urged to attend.

The purposes of the vigil are: to show solidarity with the Viva Palestina convoy, in which five men sponsored by the DAWC are taking part; to protest against the continuing vicious siege of Gaza by Israel with Egyptian, US and EU connivance; and to commit ourselves in 2010 to campaign for the boycott of Israeli goods and the withdrawal of investment supported by, among many, many others, the Irish Congress of Trades Unions.
