Boycott Israel Protest

category cork | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Tuesday April 07, 2009 19:59author by Joe Moore - ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaignauthor email mapuche at eircom dot netauthor phone 087-2994796 Report this post to the editors

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign will hold its monthly protest in support of the Israeli boycott on Saturday 25th April, at 1.00pm in Daunt's Square, Cork.

For more than 60 years, Western governments have allowed Israel to deprive the Palestinians of their rights, contrary to International Law and United Nations resolutions.

Given the inaction of our governments, it is up to us, ordinary people, to use our purchasing power in order to impose the necessary pressure on Israel.

1. We must boycott Israeli products.

2. We must demand that Irish companies stop investing in Israel.

3. Using the boycott to demonstrate our will, we must force our government to demand that the EU and the UN impose sanctions on Israel.

Until there is justice for the Palestinians, our watchwords must be,

Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions.

Israeli fruit, vegetables and fresh herbs carry the brand names Carmel and Jaffa.

Israeli plastic DIY and garden products are made by a company called Keter.

Boycott all these products.

Attempts to get people to boycott Israeli goods have being going on now for months but they have been ineffective. I do not know anyone who is boycotting Israeli goods, I have never heard anyone discussing or debating the idea of boycotting Israeli goods. This campaign is a failure and it can never succeed because this is too complex an issue to rally people around support for a boycott because I think most people don't oppose Israel.
They might not support the Israeli treatment of Palestinians or the war in Gaza, but they also do not support Hamas or the PLO and they are opposed to the rocket attacks on Israel and the suicide bombers.
Most people support the right of Israel to exist. Most people are disgusted by the likes of Ahmadinejad's holocaust denials and calls for the destruction of Israel.
Trying to organise a boycott is a waste of time because this conflict is not simple and for most people they don't view it in the simple terms that the boycott organisers see it and most people don't support the destruction of Israel, whereas many of the organisers of the boycott do support the destruction of Israel. I have been on protests and heard leading people from the platforms chanting Palestine will be free from the river to the sea.

Ilan Eshel, director of the Organization of Fruit Growers in Israel, said Scandinavian countries have also been canceling orders. Eshel says : "It's getting worse, and more voices can be heard calling to boycott Israeli merchandise," he said. "Until the operation began we had excellent business, though the economic recession in Europe was causing a slight fall in the market."
