Sponsored climb of the Galtee Mountains

Fundraiser for important court challenge

Last year, in January 2007 a group of brave souls undertook to clim part of the Galtee Mountains to raise funds for a key court challenge with regard to the blocking of public access at the Old Head of Kinsale, Co. Cork. This year, as the case approaches a hearing in the High Court, funds are badly needed and we need more hardy folks to take to the mountains again.

The Old Head of Kinsale story is well known to most Indymedia'ers by now and has been running since 1997 when Ashbourne Holdings build an exclusive luxury golf course on the beautiful County Cork Headland and blocked off a public right of way that has been used for centuries (see previous articles linked below).

We had hoped that the right of way issue would go to the High Court last Autumn but it didn't and we are now very hopeful that it will be heard this year. We are fortunate that we have a number of very supportive legal people but we still need funds to take the case.

There have been a number of fundraising events including pub quizzes and a sponsored Head-shave but last year's first Galtee climb was the most successful to-date, raising more than €2,000 for the fighting fund.

Help us make the 2008 Galtee Climb for the Old Head fund an even greater success by joining the walk on Sunday, 20th January.

A car-pool will operate from Cork, departing from outside Cork Opera House at. 9.30am. For sponsorship cards or further details e-mail Claire Porter at clairerporter@gmail.com

Around 25 people took part in the sponsored walk in the Galtees for the Free the Old Head of Kinsale campaign. Looks like it will turn out to be even more succcessful than last year with around €3,000 being raised once all sponsorship cards are in. Thanks to all concerned.

You mean you walked up the Galtee mountains, which takes about three hours to the summit of Galteemoor, what do you want a medal ?

Curiously, i walked up there many years ago at the at the time was was reading a book called dianetics by L Ron Hubbard, at the summit I kit you not, there was a guy walking who looked just like L Ron Hubbard did on the back of his book, skipper cap on and all, with two nubile young ladies in bare fee, it was a summers day.

As Uri Geller says 'syncronicity'. !
