New Mini-Documentary about Rossport Protests

This 7 minute documentary follows a couple of protestors who travelled down to Rossport in February 2007 to protest against Shell's construction of an on-shore refinery. This video follows their progress as they take part in an invasion of the site.

Operating pressure of line

suggestion:

A: How about a pressure that's been used for a pipeline in a residential area with this kind of profile (blanket bog, prone to landslides) before in Ireland?

and

B: How about a pressure limit that is acceptable to the people who will have to live near it?

Or

C: How about refining the gas at sea, the way it's done at Kinsale and hundreds of other locations around the world?

Most of us protesters are from Mayo, Len. That's not true of the outside (often violent) troublemakers such as:

Shell
Statoil
Marathon Oil
An Garda Síochána (Bellinaboy Battalion)
Shell Security (all the way from Longford, and beyond)

To any interested media; if you're at Bellinaboy any day and would like to talk to someone from Mayo, your best bet is head for the protesters. The troublemakers are almost always from somewhere else (see above list).

This video mainly focuses on the potentially devastating environmental consequences that the proposed Corrib Gas Refinery will have in Ballinaboy, County Mayo. There are interviews with Shell’s public relationship (propaganda), representatives Sea to Sea Activists, and reports of direct actions against the Corrib Gas Project (in its present form).

English subtitles included.

In this video protestors discuss the reasons for their demonstration outside Shell HQ in Ireland. They argue against what they believe is the undemocratic distribution of Irish gas overseas.

Well Mr w.

If this is how you make your money then I suppose you are a freelance journalist.

Now that we have established your credentials as bona fide please riddle me this!

If a journalist is expected to be objective and unbiased do you think this video has any journalistic merit?

Dear mr 'ego',

Your choice of moniker and line of argument betray both an unjustified bitterness and a total ignorance of the role of the journalist. I can only assume that you are an opponent of shell to sea and happy to attack your opponents on any old grounds at all.

Firstly, there is no possible way that anybody who knew anything about journalism could think that 'freelance journalist' is a grand title - it simply describes somebody who works as a journalist but has no regular job and has to flog their work to the media by the piece. You could start submitting articles to the media tomorrow and become a 'freelance journalist'. If you demonstrate over a period of time that this is your main source of income, then you will be eligible to join the NUJ.

Secondly, having a go at the presenter of a documentary for his 'ego' is more than a little silly, not to mention bitter and spiteful. The whole point of a presenter is that he fronts the piece - he wouldn't be much effing use if he kept his head down and his mouth shut in a display of modesty likely to impress your begrudgery. Also, it's undoubtedly the case that the use of such devices (i.e. a presenter who is involved in the action) helps tremendously with effective communication of the material to the audience and such devices are used frequently in corporate documentary production simply because they make the material more engaging and easier to relate to. It's no surpise at all that people such as w. who are brave enough to put their faces to such important roles should be the target of bitter begrudgers.

Thirdly, your claim that "a journalist is expected to be objective and unbiased" is simply false. The NUJ code of conduct requires that "a journalist shall strive to ensure that the information he/she disseminates is fair and accurate, avoid the expression of comment and conjecture as established fact and falsification by distortion, selection or misrepresentation." As long as the information is accurate and the journalist believes it is fairly presented, there is no compulsion to be 'objective' - journalists can and do ethically take sides on issues all the time. The code also allows the expression of comment as long as it is not presented as established fact. The piece above is clearly entitled "against shell" and the point of view of the participants is extraordinarily obvious throughout. Only a total moron would claim that this commentary is attempting to be an exposition of established fact.

Dear sir,

if you really believe a journalist needs to be 'objective and unbiased' could you trouble yourself to find and read the three articles written by

Kevin Myers about this matter in his column in the Indo over the last two years. Your innocence is touching, but a quick perusal of what

that loser has written, including what appears to be an incitement to assasinate certain protesters, should bring you quickly into the real

world.
