Solidarity Protest at Shell's Irish HQ, 53 Lwr Leeson Street, Dublin 2

There will be a protest against what is currently happening in Mayo on Wednesday October 4th at 1PM, outside the headquarters of Shell Exploitation Ireland Ltd, 53 Lwr Leeson Street, Dublin 2 (just around the corner from the Department of Marine and Natural Resources) on the corner of Adelaide Road.

Bring flags, whistles, posters, banners, stuff to make noise.

Hundreds of Gardaí are currently in Erris as part of a planned operation to force contractors through the Shell to Sea picket line at the Ballinaboy refinery site.

Shell to Sea wants -

the gas from the Corrib field to be processed safely offshore;

the profits from the sale of the gas to benefit the people of Ireland;

an end to the attempts to criminalise those who protest against Shell.

You may or may not be aware that both Shell and Statoil Petrol filing stations have in the last year been sold to an Irish based Equity Group, so in fact they only have their former names still in place but are n't owned by either group any longer. Just thought that this information would be useful for future protests, probably should be kept to the Dail and other sites owned by Shell and Statoil

It's absolutely true that both Shell and Statoil have sold their forecourt businesses in the 26 counties to local businessmen (I'm lucky enough to have met some of these creatures when we were raising sponsorship on the streets in the summer -gruesome capitalist types from central casting they were too- one particularly odious one was even smoking a fat cigar).

However, the petrol you buy at a Shell Garage still comes from Shell, and the petrol you buy at a Statoil Garage (or a TESCO) still comes from Statoil. The franchise owner has a new boss, but he can't go elsewhere for his fuel supplies, so when we picket these places we are having a direct effect on Shell's profitability, as well as raising awareness in a simple and easy to comprehend way.

Other places such as the Norwegian Embassy, Statoil's HQ in the IFSC, and of course the Department of Marine on Adelaide Road will be targeted in the next little while.

The great Corrib Gas swindle, brought to you by the already much discredited FF/PD coalition and their multi-national pay masters, will continue to be resisted by the people in Erris and at other places where appropriate.

A couple of things to consider today:

Why is Erris effectively a police state at the moment? Hundreds of cops are stationed in the area, harassing local people and visitors alike. At the same time in areas of Limerick city, drug wars and feuds continue to rage unabated, endangering the lives of ordinary people. Why can't McDowell get a few guards down there then?

Why are the guards being used as a private security force for Shell? Is this how despicable our country has become?

Why won't Minister Dempsey release the documents detailing the terms of the lease granted to the Shell-led consortium, the plan of development for the pipeline and the quantitative risk assessment of the terminal at Ballinaboy. The documents are the subject of a discovery order by the High Court but Shell is adamant in refusing to make them available. In a reply to a written question from SF's Martin Ferris, Dempsey stated that he was legally prevented from releasing the papers.

Ferris questioned the basis of Dempsey's contention that he is legally prevented from doing so given that the High Court has ordered their discovery. Ferris contended that they ought to be made available at least to the legal representatives of the persons who have been the subject of Shell’s own legal action.

We can only encourage Ferris in his efforts, but this isn't going to be won at parliamentary level, it will be won at grassroots level throughout the country and in Erris.

Supporters are asked to check Indymedia for updates on the situation in Erris as well as demonstrations and actions presently being organised throughout the country. Details of mailing and text lists will be posted shortly on this thread.
