A month after the arrival of Scotland's Hate Crime Act and it appears reports of the demise of the Scottish Enlightenment may have been premature, no thanks to the SNP but due to the doughty spirit of the Scots.

Should governments be able to censor online content for the entire world? That's what Australia is claiming the right to do. But do they really think China and Russia should be able to choose what the world sees?

If a picture paints 1000 words then the poster has used 35000 words (and quite a few megabytes!) to say what they could have in maybe 200 words or maybe 10 pics.

author by Cllr Joan Collins - Dublin 12 Anti BIN TAX CAMPpublication date Tue Sep 12, 2006 00:10author address author phone Report this post to the editors

On Sept 2nd up to 350 people turned up to a meeting in the Bosco Community hall in Drimnagh in response to the non collection of bins. People were very angry at the councils tactic of leaving bins behind with an orange tag and attempting to pressure people into paying the bin tax. The fact that this government bring in legislation and tax loopholes that allow the wealthy in this country pay no tax and that the same government heap on double taxation (stealth taxes) on the ordinary person. Water tax is on the agenda, 2010 is the year water tax will be introduced according to an An Taisce report. ESB, GAS, health, housing, grocery's all these issues were raised by people at the meeting. 50% of the tax take is now raised by stealth taxes. The meeting voted to keep up non payment, to dispose of our waste into the bin trucks and that we would organise a protest at Davitt Road depot, all agreed and voted on at the meeting. The main reason people were determined to hold out is 1. the Supreme court case. Our case is in the Supreme Court and we are waiting for a date. 2. the elections are only 8 months away and the Campaign
will make the issue of the the bin tax to be abolished and no water tax a political issue in the election, Already the Teflon taoiseach has announced that the waiver will be issued to all Old age pensioners and the possibility of an amnesty is been considered. It was agreed that I would be out every morning the following week to support people disposing of their waste into the trucks. which I did. It was brilliant, neighbours were waiting on each road to dispose of their waste, helping each other, organising what to do next week, one particular man commented to me that he always viewed himself as a law abiding citizen but he was so angry at the Government because people were been forced to throw their waste into bin trucks. But he was going to continue, he was not going to pay, he was getting militant. Every morning from 8am we walked with the bin truck and disposed of the backlog of two weeks waste. Over 200 people turned up at the depot on Saturday morning at 10am. mainly people from Drimnagh and support from people in Crumlin, Walkinstown and Ballyfermot. We had a meeting at the end of the protest and agreed we would protest this saturday at the same time. Contact Cllr Joan Collins 086-3888151
