The G8: Protesting the Protest

One of the problems that charities have experienced in the last twenty years or so has been what is referred to as ‘compassion fatigue’. Images of the pot-bellied, malnourished kids of sub-Saharan Africa, it was found, did not play well in communities where male unemployment often ran at 80%, single mothers fed their wains a diet of fish fingers and cornflakes, and pensioners froze to death in the winter trying to shave a few extra pounds off their heating bills. Diseases such as TB and even rickets reappeared and hospitals began to admit people from working class communities diagnosed as suffering from malnutrition. As the working class traditionally contributed more to ‘famine relief’ at the behest of wealthy charities and wealthier pop stars than the middle and upper classes put together, the charities sat up and took notice. They began to harp on about tackling poverty ‘at home’ as well as abroad, and people were urged to give generously to provide after-care facilities for the kids of single parents in inner city Salford or rehab centres in Edinburgh and Newcastle. Basically, working class communities were asked yet again to self-medicate without the fuckin’ price of the medicine and put their hand into their own pockets to come up with the cash. And those asking them to do so are the self-same people, celebrities and nonebrities alike who asked us all to the G8 summit in Scotland. Thankfully, and unsurprisingly, many people have told them to go fuck themselves. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3While I agree with the thrust of your aritcle in that summit protests achieve little in terms of advancing, in a material sense, local struggles against capitalism I do see them as a useful forum. Personally I have felt inspired to get involved in local struggles since my return from Scotland. It was a great opportunity to build solidarity within the group I went with, the eco-village provided a working example of a horizontal decision making and was very useful in terms of learning about what other groups from abroad were doing and telling them what we were doing. As an example of this I would point to the awareness that was raised about the Rossport 5 and shell in Ireland. Although all of this could be achieved outside of the context of a summit protest the fact is that they are a magnet for activists and an important educational experience which can leave you feeling empowered to carry on the stuggle at home.
There was an interesting article on the wire before the G8 happened about this already.
For your organisation to not participate in the anti authoritarian demonstration at the G8 in Scotland this summer is nothing short of a disgrace. Where did you spend your holidays instead - ibiza? The G8 meeting less than 100 miles from where most of you "organise" and you would not even cyle, hitch, take the bus for £30, over to Scotland to join in. Don't get me wrong I am not talking about the Make Poverty History demo or any march at Gleneagles itself. I am talking about the Dissent group who blocked roads and moterways in an attempt to shut the illeagal summit down. It took just a few days out of what we do the rest of the year, we got to meet activists from all over Europe to share stories, ideas and experiences, we had a solidarity with the Rossport 5 demo at the Irish Consulate and then we went home to continue for the other 360 days of the year whatever we are involved in. Why were the workers you mention there? Because the relevence of such a form of protest does not correspond with their political philosophy for change. Not now anyway. If they have a few days to spare for protesting for sure they would spend the time better idoing it in the locality. That doesn't take anything away from those who used their time to focus on the global bastards rather than local ones. After all they can do that the other 360 days of the year. They are just fortunate that at this point in their lives they can give up a few days to "fight the real enemy!" So see you in the UK in 2013!
