mayor of London and top human rights lawyer to speak at "End Impunity" meeting

Organised by the The Irish World newspaper and the Pat Finucane Centre for Human Rights, the Public Meeting, entitled "End Impunity", raises the thorny issue of state actors taking responsibility for killings at The Chamber, City Hall, London, on Monday, September 5 at 7pm. Also addressing the event will be University of Ulster legal academic Angela Hegarty and Phil Shiner, public interest ;lawyer. The event will focus on the case of Peter McBride, the Belfast teenager murdered by Scots Guardsmen Wright and Fisher, who were allowed to continue service in the British Army, in spite of their murder convictions.

In 1992 Scots Guards Mark Wright and James Fisher murdered an unarmed Belfast teenager, Peter Mc Bride*. In 2001 the Army sent these soldiers, convicted of murder, to fight in Iraq. The rules that allowed them to return to active service are still in place. Until that changes, soldiers convicted of human rights abuses will continue to be sent to Iraq and other conflict zones. The Article 7-End Impunity Campaign seeks to remove the loophole that allows military personnel convicted of serious crimes such as murder, rape or torture to remain in service. Article 7 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states “All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law.” The military should not be above the law!

Why is Livingstone been invited didn't Livingstone support Ian Blair metropolitian police after the shooting of Jean Charles Menez in Stockwell London.

Yes. You're right. Livingstone came out shamefully on Ian Blair's side after the Menendez murder. We're playing the politics of broadest appeal in order to maximise the impact of the Peter McBride campaign for the family. Livingstone's name on the bill catches headlines and reaches constituencies we can't. There are dangers playing this game, I know.
