What majority is that "Plato" ??? The last referendum was well defeated, and if the sad excuse of a govenment was to put pro choice and an end to interference in womens right to control of their bodies to a referendum now, I think there is a big chance of it passing.
Maybe one day Eire will come into the modern world out of the shadows of myth and supersticious beliefs also know as religion.
Funny how so called "pro lifers" are nowhere to be seen at anti war protests or anti G8 battles given that these result in the deaths of millions of real children every year, as opposed to microscopic cells of potential people.
"Pro lifers" = Facists
Its a sad day when Abortion comes to Ireland and it is the Progressive Democrats that are introducing it!
""The morning-after pill should be made available to girls as young as 11 if necessary, the Minister for Health said today.
Tánaiste Mary Harney said the emergency contraceptive pill should be administered in necessary cases after a shock report from the Crisis Pregnancy Agency revealed the age for first sexual intercourse was falling.""

Abortion cuts across the right and left. Anarchists can't agree on the ethics of killing animals for eating, let alone unborn children for whatever. What anarchists do agree on is that the violence of the state is not a legitimate means to an end. Are the anarcho-vegans pushing for legislation or direct action in defense of animals etc etc.
Abortion is many things. One of them is a profit driven industry that lies about what its selling.
Its an emotive subject just like anti-war is to any vet (WW2, Vietnam, West Belfast, Palestine etc). Don't assume a consensus. It's a debate about "legitimate killing" and killing in a way that is extremely painful for the unborn life being killed. And one would think pretty traumatic for those involved in the killing.
If abortion was available free on the health service to any woman who wants/needs one, the profit motive would be removed. As to comparing abortion with the killing of animals (or human beings) Anarch is ignoring the fact that what a woman having an abortion does is reclaim HER body. As soon as Anarch figures out how the woman can have her body without ending the life of the embryo/foetus, then we can do away with abortion, but not until then!
Seeing as its been raised in the odd way above I thought I'd post a link to an archive of WSM articles on the struggle for abortion rights here.
Most anarchists in Ireland haven't had much of a problem working out which side they are on when SPUC were serving people with injunctions for daring to tell women phone numbers, or YD were assaulting people or more simply the state was serving an injunction on a 14 year old rape victim to prevent her getting an abortion in England.
Some of course would not see abortion as an option for themselves or one they would advise to others. But its hard to see a case where any anarchist could support a state ban and all that would imply. The bottom line being that it is the womens choice - not that of the state.
What about sex selection abortion? All the rage in China & USA. Is it a question of ageism here?
if men had not been allowed vote in the abortion referendium polls of the past we would not be still living under this sexist legislation.
If men don't count...why should their be any obligation on a man in relation to maintenance of a child, if the woman chooses to have a child rather than an abortion?
How can we discuss this important issue when some people have illustrated they have a profound difficulty with the maeaning of simple words.
This piece is titled, "Pro-Choice Campaign calls for safe, free, legal abortion!"
I simply ask how can we discuss this sensibly with anyone who belives that an operation can ever be considered "safe" when it ALWAYS results in one of the patients dying.
"if men had not been allowed vote in the abortion referendium polls of the past we would not be still living under this sexist legislation"
Actually this isn't true for two reasons
1. None of the referendums included an option that would have resulted in free safe and legal abortion on demand.
2. Polls and exit polls show that there was not that much of a difference between the way different sexes voted. The biggest divides were those based on age and urban/rural.
In any case its not clear that allowing ALL women to decide whether or not ANY woman can have an abortion would be any sort of a step forward. It should be that the decision is for the individual women concerned - of course as part of that choice many women do consult the potential father, their parents, their friends etc. But this also is their choice not something that should be imposed on them.
