Campaign Against the Bin Tax

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | event notice author Tuesday November 16, 2004 13:11author by Campaign Against the Bin Tax Report this post to the editors

Important Public Meeting

Thursday November 18th 8pm
Ringsend Community Centre
Thorncastle Street
Ringsend

Speakers include:
Cllr. Joan Collins
(Jailed Bin Tax Protestor)
Local Councillors
Shay Ryan SWP (Local Campaign Coordinator)

THIS IS a very important public meeting. Dublin City Council is planning to go on the offensive in the coming weeks and months. They know there is still wide spread opposition to the bin tax. They are planning to bring a new pay-by-lift system in the New Year. But this is still unfair. It discriminates against families and there will still be a yearly charge. So it’s still double taxation.

The Campaign has been to the High court to make the case that Dublin City Council’s policy does not encourage recycling and is a form of double tax and so far we’ve been getting a favourable hearing so make sure you attend this meeting to hear more of the details.

According to a recent report the so called recycled waste from Ireland is actually exported to countries like China and dumped there instead. The council pays private companies to collect this waste, some 800,000 tons of it, but they simply sell it on to brokers and it’s then shipped abroad. Privately run bring centres are now charging local people who bring in their recyclable waste. A lot of money is being made at the expense of the environment and the tax payer.

At the moment the elected local councillors are having ongoing meetings in City Hall to bring in the estimates for Dublin city.
This is the budget which is supposed to fund the day-to-day running of the city. However it will include bin charges and we are demanding that all councillors who voiced their opposition to the bin tax during the June elections vote down the estimates. Why are the authorities chasing after law abiding tax paying working class people for non payment of this unfair double tax? Why don’t they use their energies chasing after the multi millionaires who pay no tax at all!
We have to pile on the pressure on the council and government. Have your say. Demand to be told how your councillors will represent you in the council.

Please make sure you attend this important meeting and please let everyone you know about the meeting and encourage them to come along too.

Contact Shay Ryan 087-9143703 for more information.

I know Joan is a wonderful person and all that but she didn't do jail time.
Her partner Dermot did.
