Britain's North Sea could have 14 billion barrels of oil and gas ? three times what the Government reckons ? but sky-high taxes and drilling bans are leaving it in the ground while jobs and cash go begging.

New independent election candidate

category galway | politics / elections | news report author Tuesday May 18, 2004 12:01author by Ann Marie Kellyauthor email annmariekellywoodlawn at yahoo dot co dot ukauthor address Woodlawn, County Galway. Report this post to the editors

Thanks to all those who have helped ...

I would like to thank all those who have recently supported my plans to run for election as an independent candidate on June 11th 2004.

Also, I would very much appreciate any publicity for my campaign which Indymedia readers might be able to provide in the weeks ahead.

I am a young law student, and I have very little money of my own to spend on advertising of any kind.

In particular, I would like to thank all of the fifteen people who travelled to Galway County Council Headquarters (in Galway City) last Saturday in support of my plans to run for election as an independent candidate.

Special thanks are also due to the very helpful and courteous staff at Galway County Council who have assisted me in several different ways during the past week.

As a direct result of all this help, I will now be able to run for election on June 11th 2004 in the Ballinasloe (County Galway) Rural Electoral Area.

The main thrust of my election campaign will focus on what I see as the key issue of MEANINGFUL local democracy - as set out under Article 28A (Item 1) of the written Constitution of the Republic of Ireland.

For some general outline information on the wider aspects of my election campaign, please visit the following Internet address:

It would be much appreciated if readers could let other people know about my election campaign: which contains a special message for young people - as can be seen via the above Internet address.

Is Mise le Meas,

Ann Marie Kelly.

Good luck. I'd love to know what motivated you to run? Either way, great to see people getting actively involved in politics - in a hands on way and not like some of the student politics all talk type shit.

What percent of the NUIG students are actually registered to vote? They could probably do with some encouragement.

You doing door to door canvassing? Focusing on students or the city in general?Wonder what the youngest age of a councillor in Galway is at the moment.

Article 28A (Item 1) of our Constitution reads as follows: "The State recognises the role of local government in providing a forum for the democratic representation of local communities, in exercising and performing at local level powers and functions conferred by law and in promoting by its initiatives the interests of such communities."

The main thrust of my election campaign will be to try and have the constitutionality of Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2002 challenged in relation to the above mentioned Article 28A statement.
