PRESS RELEASE

Following a peaceful demonstration (May 12th) by the Irish Peace Society on the visit of the Premier of China, Mr. Wen Jiabao, to the University of Limerick, the Irish Peace Society received a commitment from the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Zhang Xiaokang, to meet formally with members of the Irish Peace Society to address the concerns raised.

The President and Vice-President of the University of Limerick, Dr. Roger Downer and Prof. Noel Whelan, conveyed the Ambassadors request to the Irish Peace Society and indicated that they will raise similar issues with the Ambassador. There were two hundred plus protesters present throughout the Premier’s two-hour visit to the University.

In the context of recent Human Rights abuses in Iraq, the Irish Peace Society believe that the fight against Human Rights abuses is ongoing and does not necessarily require photographic or video evidence to place and maintain it on the international agenda.

amnesty International has made numerous reports on continuing Human Rights violations by China. The Irish Peace Society will raise these issues and those of the EU-China Human Rights Dialogue.
