The key witness in a case the US govt has against Julian Assange and for which he could have faced a jail term of 175 years and the alleged reason why the British government have held him in a high security prison for the last two years, has come forward to admit it is all based on lies. The person is a fraudster but was briefly involved in raising money for Wikileaks and used the opportunity to embezzle money from them. The person in question is from Iceland. The whole saga reveals how the FBI used the Icelandic govt as part of their efforts to entrap Assange. This news means there is no case anywhere against Assange and he should be released immediately. The British govt who regularly bang on about human rights and the lack of free press in other countries has been denying Assange's freedom for years now and their own mainstream press have not made much effort to fight for his cause. read full story / add a comment

The Citizens’ Assembly on abortion rights was set up under pressure from the Repeal movement. It surprised the conservative Dáil when it recommended that women and pregnant people be trusted – that abortion should be legalised upon request up to 12 weeks; for socio-economic reasons up to 22 weeks; for health; and for fatal foetal abnormality. But how will these ever get implemented given that the Dáil parties have an extremely limited position on abortion that is way behind the public? What is Latin America Week? Latin America Week is a range of conferences, meetings, workshops and cultural events around Ireland, focusing on different issues each year in April. An annual programme of educational, cultural and campaigning events on issues relating to human, social and economic rights in Latin America. LAW began as Central America Week in 1986 in order to increase the impact of many separate campaigns and events being organised by a variety of groups. It became Latin America Week after its tenth anniversary in 1996. The overall aim of LAW is to concentrate the attention of the public on Latin America for one week, so as to highlight the justice issues at stake in the region and thus to facilitate campaigning and solidarity actions between Ireland and Latin America. read full story / add a comment

In the early hours of Thursday morning, feminist pro-choice activists Díobháil (Bíonn Díobháil a dhéanamh againn: We make mischief) struck again and dropped a banner from Galway Cathedral stating “Repeal the 8th - Free, Safe, Legal” demanding access to abortion. For too long the Church and the State have controlled our bodies and our choices. It is time to finally end the unholy alliance of Church and State. While Díobháil respects peoples’ personal religious beliefs, these should not be imposed on others, and vast majority of people in Ireland agree.
