The Muslim man who attacked Koran-burning protester Hamit Coskun with a knife has been spared jail after the judge said he "lost his temper". Hamit, meanwhile, remains in hiding, as concerns about two-tier justice grow.

Church leaders are too quick to condemn Tommy Robinson and the Unite the Kingdom march, says Chris Larkin. We don't know what Jesus would have made of our politics, but we can?t just assume he?d have been a Lib Dem voter.

Anti-Bin tax campaign for Galway?

category galway | bin tax / household tax / water tax | event notice author Tuesday November 04, 2003 19:16author by Orla Ni Chomhraiauthor email nichomhrai at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

Thursday, 6th November Brid Smith, PRO for the Dublin City Anti-Bin Tax campaign will address a public meeting to be held at 8.15 pm in Java's Coffee House, Abbeygate Street, Galway.

Just to add to the press release below, there have been some comments from the media and polticians which imply that people outside Dublin have no problem paying bin-tax, and essentially this has been used to try to guilt trip people in Dublin into paying the tax and to try to whip up bad feeling against the protestors. Cork is re-starting their anti-bin tax campaign, and hopefully we can get something going in Galway. I don't know if this meeting will kick start a campaign or not but at least people will hear some of the arguments. The anti-incinerator group, Galway for a Safe environment has also expressed concerns over bin-tax and pointed out that in Belgium waste charges increased fourfold following the introduction of incineration.

"THE BIN TAX AND PRIVATISATION OF PUBLIC SERVICES" Public Meeting

On Thursday, 6th November Brid Smith, PRO for the Anti-Bin Tax campaign will address a public meeting to be held at 8.15 pm in Java's Coffee House, Abbeygate Street, Galway. Brid has recently served two weeks in jail for her part in the Bin Tax protests, at the time 10% of the prisoners in Mountjoy Womens prison were Bin Tax protesters. 41 out of 71 councils that have introduced refuse charges have since privatised the service. The bin charges are just the start of the privatisation of our public services.
The meeting will address other issues that have not have been covered by the mainstream media blackout such as double taxation, environmental concerns, revival of working class organisation.
Denis O'Brien, tax scammer, calls us "screaming children", Michael O'Leary,anti-union wealth shark, calls workers "headbangers".We demand wealth taxes instead of new stealth taxes.
Come along and hear all the latest news from the campaign.Hundreds of people are attending such meetings in Dublin to hear the arguments against the tax.

This is an SWP organised meeting. Also, there have been reports in the media of illegal burning. This is partly to do with items which cannot be collected in the bins given. The council are planning to put some sort a system in place for these.

As a galway resident, I have no problem paying a bin tax. The polluter pays, and each household pollutes. I think it's great that most of the city has three bins, only one of which is waste.
I am against an incinerator. I believe any protests should be targeted at the companys and businesses that waste unscrupelously.

Why themn shouldnt thr companies pay? Why do you middle class greens have to put the boot into ordinary people all the time? Why dont you merge with the PDs, yo have a lot in common.
