The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Bin Tax meeting in Ballinteer

category dublin | bin tax / household tax / water tax | news report author Friday September 19, 2003 00:08author by Brian - Socialist Partyauthor address http://socialistparty.net/bintax/index.htm Report this post to the editors

Very brief report on an anti-bin tax public meeting in Ballinteer.

Well over a hundred people crowded into the Dundrum Family Recreation Centre tonight for a public meeting called by the Dun Laoghaire / Rathdown Campaign Against the Bin Tax. It was standing room only as local residents spilled out the door of the hall.

There was a furious mood as most people had just heard the news that the local Council is planning to implement non-collection of the bins of people who are boycotting the bin tax in the near future. Letters are being sent out to those non-payers who owe more than 200 euro warning them that their bin service can be cut off in ten days.

There was also outrage at the prospect of court action being taken against Socialist Party TD Joe Higgins and Cllr Clare Daly in the morning.

The meeting was addressed by Lisa Maher (Secretary of the Dun Laoghaire / Rathdown Campaign and SP) and by Melissa Halpin (SWP). Lisa gave a report on the bin truck blockades in Fingal.

The meeting agreed a series of actions, including the sending of a delegation to the bin truck depot on Monday.

If and when Dun Laoghaire / Rathdown Council decide to start non-collection, residents are prepared to blockade bin trucks until the Council backs down.

Another public meeting took place in Dun Laoghaire tonight. A round of public meetings is being organised across the local authority area.
