Abduction of Garret O'Connor - Bring Him Home Now

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday May 13, 2003 10:20author by John Meehan Report this post to the editors

Sinn Fein, other public representatives, must act now

Garret O'Connor, from South Armagh, disappeared on Sunday last while on the way to sign for bail at Dundalk Garda Station. He is charged with RIRA membership. His father Mark says the Provisional IRA kidnapped him, and his life is in danger.

Garret O'Connor, from South Armagh, disappeared on Sunday last, May 11, while on the way to sign for bail at Dundalk Garda Station. He is charged with RIRA membership. His father Mark says the Provisional IRA kidnapped him, and his life is in danger.

Archbishop Seán Brady has called for his safe return. Other public representatives - especially people on the left - should do the same.

A particular responsibility falls on members and representatives of the Sinn Fein party, which has a large following in the area where Garret O'Connor disappeared.

The IRA tonight denied abducting a man missing from his home in Armagh city since Sunday.

Gareth O'Connor has not been seen since Sunday.

His father said he was "100% certain" the IRA had abducted him.

Mr O'Connor added: "The longer it goes on the worse it is getting - my worst fear is that he is dead and they just haven't discovered the body."

Who do you believe - the O'Connor family or the IRA?

I believe the O'Connor family.

Concerning the anonymous postings about this story - I make it a rule not to engage in any way with people who hide their identities for no good reason - I advise others to do the same, and, the slow progress towards a rational debate on the indymedia newswire may continue.

So you don't communicate with people who hide their identities for no good reason? Well would not wanting to be the next kidnap victim of pira be a good enough reason for hiding my identity?
I don't know the man concerned. I sympathize with his family, but it appears he has been keeping bad company. rira is a sickness. Anyone who draws near to rira can expect to be contaminated by it and to face the consequences. I am sorry that the man's family is suffering, but rira is a sickness.

So now they think it's a 'rogue' IRA unit rather than the IRA themselves. Maybe so, but did the possibility it was their own ever cross their minds?

when you say fuk him, for his omagh bomb. The same could be said for the brit army FRU agent A who made and planned the Omagh bomb. Unless you are implying that he is the brit army agent A. Not to mention Special branch agent Kevin fulton who warned his special branch colleagues about the bomb on several occasions. It would be more appropriate given the information coming to light in recent weeks about FRU/Special branch/brit intelligence service agents to apply the same phrase to the brits underhand dirty dealings.

Has anybody thought that perhaps he's gone on the run and that this publicity is the last thing he needs?
