The Unmanageables held a Mourning Tea at the Irish Aviation Department this morning as part of the International Womens Day for Disarmament. Veils were worn in mourning for the lives lost to War. The location was chosen by the Women to symbolise our disgust at the Irish Aviation Authority's facilitation of the continued illegal war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan. Blood on our hands symbolises our culpability in war and rendition flights. We say Our Government is not mandated to utilise Shannon in such a manner. Lady Unmanageable say's "Out Damn Bertie ! US Navy’s most senior legal official, Dr Albert Moro, says the US administration is guilty of war crimes over the use of torture at Guantanamo Bay. The current Irish government by extension is also guilty of war-crimes by facilitating CIA ‘rendition programmes’ and refusing to search CIA planes carrying people to torture sites. read full story / add a comment

A “special all-day debate” on European issues is to be held in the Dáil Eireann, on 10th May. But it’s unlikely that CIA torture flights will be mentioned or indeed the fact that (unelected) EU foreign policy chief claims that he knows nothing or has no power to ask countries about the flights. Or the fact that EU governments, including Ireland's, are covering up the truth. And meanwhile, the US claims that rendition is a well-established procedure that has no connection with torture. It all depends on your definition it seems. Socialist members of the European Parliament's committee investigating the CIA's activities in Europe have called for a NATO representative to appear before the committee to answer questions concerning the possible involvement of the NATO-led Stabilisation Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina (SFOR) in the abduction of six people from Bosnia. The call follows EU foreign affairs chief Javier Solana's denial of any knowledge of the CIA's use of European countries for the transport and illegal detention of prisoners, which he made in response to questions from members of the committee on Tuesday 2 May. The TDIP committee's interim report dated 24 April proposes a resolution in which the European Parliament will judge it implausible that certain European countries have been unaware of extraordinary renditions that have taken place on their territory and in their airspace or airports, and will deplore the extraordinary rendition by Bosnian authorities of six persons of Algerian origin to agents of the CIA. read full story / add a comment

In spite of efforts by Euro MEP Sean O'Neachtain and others to discredit the facts that the CIA has been using Shannon airport for its torture rendition programme, the truth is gradually leaking out. It may take several years for so-called "concrete evidence" such as lists of tortured prisoners who were "rendered" through Shannon, and details of Irish government ministers knowledge and approval of these crimes, to become public, but this will come too. read full story / add a comment

For the record, the group of four, Tim Hourigan, Mary Kelly, Deirdre Morgan and Edward Horgan, who made a similar submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs on 20 Dec 2005, also offered to make a similar presentation to the EU Committee. The EU declined on cost grounds, and invited me only. However, I have received substantial help from a dedicated group of peace activists, mainly Irish, but with a few significant non-Irish contributers. Over the past month a Garda has confirmed to me in confidence that they have directed not to search US CIA aircraft or US military aircraft at Shannon airport, and that many of the Gardai disagree with this directive because it means “… turning a blind eye to the probability of wrongdoing, and we all know what terrible things such policies have led to in the past.” In my submission to the European Parliament I called a spade a spade, and referred several times to the unlawful killing of over 100,000 in Ir read full story / add a comment

I went to the European Parliament in Brussels to tell the Parliament what I knew of Ireland’s involvement in the unlawful rendition for torture process at Shannon airport. I insisted on linking the extraordinary rendition process with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the combined serial abuses of international law that these wars and the torture processe involved. To a large extent I was telling the EU parliamentary special committee what they did not want to hear – “don’t mention the wars” – I told them anyway, in the brief summary of my submission that the 15 minute time slot allowed me. My main submission was thirty-seven pages long, with 45 separate attachments and it became clear very quickly that very few had even read the executive summary of my submission, and some of those who did, read it only with the intention of trying to discredit it, and discredit me. Speaking to MEP's in Brussels on Thursday, former Irish army commandant and UN peacekeeper Edward Horgan said that the Parliament's TDIP Committee investigating the CIA's activities in Europe must call at least four Irish Government ministers to face questions about torture-related abuses at Irish airports: the Ministers for Justice, Foreign Affairs, Defence and Transport. The Department of Transport's figures for the first quarter of 2006 show that over 1,300 armed US troops are passing through Shannon Airport on their way to or from Iraq each day. At the same time, as documented in Horgan’s presentation, flight logs of aircraft owned or operated by the CIA show that Shannon has served as one of the most important nodes in a network of airports used by the agency to conduct its programme of "extraordinary renditions" for torture. It is a matter of particular urgency for Horgan that hundreds of undocumented prisoners are in imminent danger of suffering summary execution in order to conceal crimes of torture committed under the extraordinary renditions programme, and he thinks it is most likely that some have already been murdered. In a perversion of justice, members of government have demanded that concerned citizens present conclusive evidence of crimes of torture committed at Shannon Airport, while directing airport security staff and members of the Garda Síochána to harass, detain and arrest these same activists – including Horgan – in their attempts to gather such evidence. read full story / add a comment

In the run up to the 90th anniversary of 1916 many wondered how best to mark the event. Some marched the day before, some a few hours after. But the teflon Taoiseach trod where few men dared. Amnesty International has brought the investigation into Extraordinary rendition and torture a step further. In the early hours of this morning it released a report titled: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Below the radar: Secret flights to torture and 'disappearance’" Shannon Warport is shown in a new light. read full story / add a comment |
