The FG TD Tony McLoughlin has tabled a private members bill to ban Fracking. There have been two previous motions to ban Fracking, the first by People Before Profit and the second by Sinn Fein. However, this third attempt has come from an unexpected quarter -from within the ranks of FG itself. Deputy McLoughlin is indeed correct to want to ban Fracking as basically all it does is pollutes the water table indefinitely over a huge area for paltry amounts of gas causing far more harm than good. read full story / add a comment

Woodburn Forest near Carrickfergus in County Antrim has become the site of the first operational Fracking rig on the island of Ireland. On Monday 16 May InfraStrata PLC began to drill, seeking to confirm a viable oil find which will pave the way for large scale extraction. Community campaigners continue to resist and all support is welcome on the site to stop the drilling while one local mounts a legal challenge. read full story / add a comment

MLA and TD hit out at ‘cloak and dagger’ tactic by authorities in allowing this drill to take place; implications for South People Before Profit to move Bill to ban Fracking in the Dáil once it resumes People Before Profit MLA, Gerry Carroll and TD, Richard Boyd Barrett condemn moves to initiate Fracking in Co Antrim and warned if test drills go ahead it could open the door for Fracking North and South. The statement comes after NI Water’s decision to allow Infrastrata to begin drilling for oil just 380 metres away from Woodburn reservoir in Co Antrim. This could lead to UK company, Tramboran, attempting to drill in Fermanagh, which in turn, could lead to Fracking in Leitrim and Cavan. read full story / add a comment

The MA CEESA (Community Education, Equality and Social Activism) took this year out to think about what we do and how we can do it better. We've been doing a lot of thinking and talking to people in that time and the result is that we're making some changes in the course while keeping the basic principles intact. read full story / add a comment

The “Sign the Pledge” campaign, coordinated by Fracking Free Network, is a big success. 154 candidates in this year’s General Election have so far personally signed the pledge against Fracking! From all parties and from all constituencies, candidates have committed to support legislation that will ban Fracking in Ireland. There is no doubt that the issue of Fracking is now a national rather than a local issue. Candidates from Cork and Kerry, from Donegal and Dublin, from Galway and Wexford have indicated that they will work to ensure that Fracking will never be introduced to Ireland. read full story / add a comment

The election cycle has come around yet again it is time to take a look at some of the issues being discussed and more importantly those not discussed and have a quick look at the economy. For this election there are more independents going up than ever before, although people should be warned that a certain fraction of them are closet FFers and FGers so if it is change you are looking for, they may not be the candidates to vote for. Sometimes people seemed to assume Independents tend to be more to the Left. There is no inherent reason this should be the case and statistically one would expect them to evenly spread to the Left and Right. So if voting for an Independent then be sure you have checked what they really stand for and their previous record if any. read full story / add a comment

Good news – it’s official! The EPA Research Study on Fracking is now stopped. This study was targeted by the campaign against Fracking as research showed the study was compromised – it was being led by companies with huge vested interests in the oil and gas industry. A statement from the Department (DCENR) yesterday (2nd) confirmed that the study has been stopped after its first phase, which included an overall look at regulations and legislation governing Fracking. Phase 2, on-the-ground studies in Leitrim and Fermanagh which would have included some drilling, will not proceed and a report of Phase 1 will be published in Q3 of this year. read full story / add a comment

For the first time, a majority of MEPs (338 to 319) has voted in favour of an immediate moratorium on hydraulic fracturing in Europe in view of its "risks and negative consequences for the climate, the environment, and public health." The MEPs voted in support of Amendment 1 to the Energy Security Strategy report. However, as the final report as a whole was not adopted, the moratorium on "any new operations involving the exploration or extraction of unconventional fuels within the EU until this is proven to be safe for the environment, citizens, and workers" will not take effect. read full story / add a comment

This report from FrackingFreeIreland comes from a campaigner from Germany who decided to build a people map of the pro Fracking lobby in Germany. The links he uncovered and the techniques have a lot to say about all other issues and how many of the most undemocratic practices are pushed forward. The principle used applies not just in Germany but is widespread including here in Ireland. Campaigner from Germany I have done a new graphic on all these lobby and pr firms trying to manage public perception in Germany. read full story / add a comment
