Main issue is defence of the right to publish The issue of the anti-Muslim film and the grizzly torture, rape and murder of Ambassador Stevens is all about the right to freedom of speech, freedom to speak about anything, criticise anything. Will people on the left, who think of themselves as left, such as on Indymedia Ireland and other groups in Ireland, now defend with everything they have got the maker of the film Nakoula Basseley Nakoula? read full story / add a comment

In any country with a half way critical media, the last few months would have been disastrous for Shell. In a crucial period in Shell’s imposition of an experimental gas pipeline on the people of Erris it emerges that Michael Dwyer, one of the security guards on this project, was part of an attempt to trigger a civil war in Bolivia. Soon after that it became clear that at least three others who had worked as security guards at the Shell compound had travelled to Bolivia with Dwyer and were wanted there for questioning. Some, it emerged, had links to fascist organizations in Eastern Europe. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The venue in Ravensdale, Co Louth, is a little difficult to find on a dark Autumn evening. However the effort was very worthwhile. The small concert hall is fashioned on the first floor from an old stable. The lighting was dim and warm with the added touch of two candelabra on either side of the platform and I think there were flowers as well. There was seating for about 70 people and the room was almost full by the time the concert started at 8.00 p.m. last night. A glass of wine could be had at the interval. I opted for a cup of coffee in a different room and made the acquaintance of Patrick Barrow and his grandson William from Monasterboice. read full story / add a comment

Background information for the Irish referendum on June 12: The EU today lacks proper democratic procedures. The Lisbon Treaty boosts this lack of democracy making the EU even more remote to its citizens. A large number of people took a chance on yesterday's changeable weather to join the annual Good Friday Rossport Solidarity walk. The walk, now in it's fourth year, is along the original route planned by Shell for their production pipeline, which was supposed to carry raw gas at extremely high pressure to the refinery at Bellanaboy. This route was abandoned by Shell in the face of protests, but not before five local men had to spend three months away from their families locked up in a high security prison in Dublin. Shell keep saying that they will announce the new route for the pipeline "soon", but it seems that they have yet to find an opportune moment. Deliberations ended in January, we are told, but for some reason they are slow to make a formal announcement of their new plan. Some people are wondering if they are waiting for a certain Dublin politician to announce his resignation, so they can then slip out the announcement while the mainstream media have their hands full... read full story / add a comment

When St Patrick as a young man escaped to his homeland from Ireland he reported in his "Confessions" that he heard in a dream the voices of the people of Ireland pleading with him, "Come back, O holy youth, and walk once more among us." Of course St Patrick did come back and he lit a fire on the Hill of Slane - a fire which never went out. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Last summer solstice (June 24, 2006) in Pretzien a tiny village of Saxony-Anhalt (former DDR - east Germany) not too far from Berlin occurred an incident of burning books or "Bücherverbrennung" as it is said in the German language. 8 months later 7 individuals went to trial on Monday accused of "inciting racial hatred" and "disparaging the dead". The men ranging in age from 24 to 29 also burned a US flag. Local villagers called the police who did not recognise the burning of a diary by Anne Frank as being that worrying. The men face up to 5 years imprisonment and the training of police officers in the state has been improved to help them deal with the large scale emergence of neo-Nazi groups & far-right crime. They'll be better skilled in understanding the neo-Nazis who get a job working next to them or the historical stuff behind a Jewish kindergarten being burned last weekend in Berlin. They may even read Anne Frank. read full story / add a comment ![]()

It has been long observed that people for some reason on their non-banking days readily absorb shite about Dangerous Places, Famous People, Sensible Saving Options, Holidays, Interesting facts, Sport results, Media, gardening and health as well looking ahead at “democratic evolution” or looking back at "how history was made". We will assume dear & attentive reader that you are one of those who has passed directly from Saturday to almost Tuesday with the sort of crumpled Sunday Papers a person uses to mop up spilt things like milk. Maybe you didn’t absorb your interesting facts & didn’t want to absorb more Dangerous places. We all have a limit of absorption, like that point where credulity ends & credibility is lost. This edition I will consider the mystical progress from Tolstoy's "War & Peace" and his accompanying anarchist beliefs to the composer Scriabin & his experimental music & then his nephew a.k.a. Comrade Molotov, Soviet negotiator with Hitler & daddy of the "petrol bomb". read full story / add a comment ![]()
