Created by two Canadian independent filmmakers, Mark Achbar and Peter Wintonick, it expands on the ideas of Chomsky's earlier book, Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media, which he co-wrote with Edward S. 8pm, Friday, 15th January in Solidarity Books, 43 Douglas Street. This is the story about how 5-6 full time activists, and 20 or so part time union activists succeeded in organising thousands of workers across 6 hospitals in Las Vegas, a city in the middle of a desert, with no history of union organising. It is rare that you find out the nuts and bolts of how people bring about change on the ground, and there is a lot to think about in his talk. Police arrested Slovak national, Stefan Gonda, on Tuesday after he had unwittingly brought plastic explosives into Ireland three days earlier on a plane. He was later released without charge . The pilot of the Danube Wings plane had been informed before take off from Poprad-Tatry airport in eastern Slovakia that the explosive material was on board , but decided to carry on with the plane’s scheduled flight . Slovak chief of border police Tibor Mako said the explosives had been attached to the straps of the man's backpack “to test security at Slovakia’s Poprad-Tatry Airport.” read full story / add a comment

Chris Strafford writes on how the Iranian people face a double danger: the possibility of a Bloodbath being launched by the Theocracy and threats of War and Sanctions from US Imperialism. Further sanctions are being put in place, and Obama is holding back Israel for the time being, but has been promising “decisive action” if Iran does not halt all uranium enrichment. One Israeli diplomat was quoted in The Guardian as saying, “Obama has convinced us that it’s worth trying the sanctions, at least for a few months” (January 3). The imperialists seem to be moving towards military aggression this year - Washington has now dismissed the validity of the intelligence estimate which concluded that Iran was no longer trying to acquire nuclear weapons. read full story / add a comment

Report by Grainne V: On December 31st 2009, 18 people gathered together on Scarriff Bridge to remember the over 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza who were killed by the Israeli Army last year and to stand in solidarity with the survivors of that attack, cynically named 'Operation Cast Lead'. We were one of many groups nationwide who met on bridges around the country at the same time as 1,400 internationals attempted to cross into Gaza through the Rafah crossing from Egypt bringing much-needed aid and solidarity. read full story / add a comment
