In an old schoolhouse in north Donegal people gather to grant St Brigid permission to cross the threshold. She carries an armful of freshly cut rushes with a white cloth tied around them. They are laid on a long set of tables, and slowly men, women and children go up gather some rushes up to make the traditional St Brigid's crosses. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Irish primary schools celebrated a victory this week as Independent Newspapers abandoned their “Building for the Future” scheme just weeks after its high-profile launch. It is the first time a major in-school marketing promotion has been scrapped and is an embarrassing climb down for Independent and their co-sponsors Bank of Ireland. The launch of “Building for the Future”, which demanded a quota of 20 tokens per pupil from schools wishing to enter, was met with condemnation from across the teaching community. read full story / add a comment

Dear friends, at this tragic moment in which at least 150,000 Haitian people have died in the recent earthquake, we would expect doctors and rescue brigades to have been sent urgently in order to help the victims. Instead, the US is taking advantage of the tragedy by sending a massive number of troops to occupy the country, while in the process boycotting the delivery of aid and occupying strategic ports and the national airport (See http://www.indymedia.ie/article/95572). The UN, which had 9,000 ocuppying troops in Haiti before the quake, is now sending more troops. As if Haiti was in the middle of a civil war! As a commentator said, seemingly Haitian people cannot be fed unless when looked down the barrel of a gun. Here in Ireland, Billy Timmins has been asking that the EU send troops as well (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/world/2010/0120/122....html). No one wants to be left out when it comes to the militarization of Haiti! read full story / add a comment

This review of the history of Orange triumphalism and violence does not attempt to deny the need for, or peoples' right to practice rituals that celebrate and reinforce their religious convictions, cultural identity, or sense of belonging and community. Rather, I am posting it on the internet in the hope of undermining the DUPs attempt to make policing and justice in Northern Ireland conditional on securing sectarian parades through Nationalist areas. read full story / add a comment

The long awaited Puppy farming Bill now being added to our Irish animal protection legislation is a much-needed and vital piece of legislation. We have all seen the results of the SPCA raids on dog breeding farms throughout Ireland. Dogs living in horrendous conditions in their own excrement with improper nourishment , housing and no veterinary care. So many having to be euthanized , their suffering so severe. What person in their right mind would object to allowing Gardai and animal protection groups more access and powers to punish the offenders who perpetrate crimes against defenceless pups and dogs. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Anyone judging from the huge numbers of troops mobilised to Haiti could reasonably believe that this is a country in the middle of a brutal civil war instead of a nation hit by a deadly earthquake. While the Media has been feeding constantly news of murder, mayhem, and gangsters supposedly in control of Haitian streets, together with calls for a “strong arm” and “security” to make possible the delivery of relief, the reality seems to be quite another. Medical and Food assistance has been largely delayed by a cobweb of inefficiency, bureaucracy and negligence and not for “security” issues. In the meantime, hungry and thirsty Haitians have been largely looking for their beloved ones under the rubble with their bare hands. Very few doctors and relief agencies have dared to go to the streets of Port-au-Prince, where precious assistance –currently stockpiling in the airport- is much needed. read full story / add a comment ![]()
