BRIEF INTRODUCTION In her book ‘The Face of War’, the American journalist, Martha Gellhorn, recognises the importance of “peacemakers”, and understands the importance of a man like Mikhail Gorbachev when he ushered in “glasnost”, and effectively ended the Cold War. (Gellhorn 1998, p365). Gellhorn is a journalist who has filed reports on a number of conflicts, including the Civil War in Spain, The War in Finland, the Japanese invasion of China, the Second World War, the War in Java, the Vietnam War, the Six Day War, and various conflicts in Central America and Panama. read full story / add a comment

Introduction. When looking at the reasons why the NGO’s might be up in arms when facing the policies of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, I have decided to focus on Trócaire and Concern, two Irish organisations passionately involved in debt relief for the Third World. Concern has been in existence since the Biafra famine of 1968, and has become internationally recognised in the intervening years. Trócaire was set up by the Irish Catholic Church in 1973 as a response mechanism to combat disasters, famines, and to offer aid to the “world’s poorest and most oppressed peoples”. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC) on 26 March 1975. The BTWC was the first Convention to ban an entire class of weapons of mass destruction, and is a key component of the international non-proliferation and disarmament framework. The European Union (EU) considers the BTWC to be the cornerstone of our efforts to prevent biological agents and toxins from ever being developed and used as weapons. read full story / add a comment

The continuing campaign to ban human cloning has run into difficulties and the issue has been fudged by fundamentalist based politics and obfuscated by claims of Bush to victory. The Muslim states abstain, Blair defies the world, the Pope mobilises the catholics, the French and Germans original very simple motion is changed, but remains in the draft €U constitution .:. Once this was a place of great hope. During the late 1980’s, the Sandinistas were consolidating the revolution in Nicaragua, the FMLN were on the brink of overthrowing the government in El Salvador and the radical movements in Guatemala and honduras were gaining ground. Today it is a region convulsed by massive delinquency and chronic state corruption whose economies are surviving tenuously on remittance money sent by migrants. The defeat of the revolutionary movements has ushered in an era of social disintegration resulting in a veritable neo-liberal dystopia. read full story / add a comment

By OLIVIA McGILL TEGUCIGALPA — Indigenous people are probably the most marginalized in Honduran society. Many communities live under constant fear of losing the land they live on, despite obligations under national and international law, the government has failed to provide them with deeds to protect their right to live on and use the land. Disputes with landowners, multinational logging companies and tourist enterprises over the recognition of land rights have led to abuses against indigenous leaders, including violence, intimidation, death threats and assassinations. The authorities have consistently failed to properly investigate such abuses or to offer adequate protection against them. full article: http://www.marrder.com/htw/special/environment/114.htm read full story / add a comment

Take an anonymous Pentagon leak from a “high level military officer,” add an appalling lack of knowledge of history, and compound it with ignorance of special warfare tactics. This process describes the article published by Newsweek breathlessly revealing that a “desperate” Defense Secretary Rumsfeld is “considering” employing the “Salvadoran option” to thwart the “growing quagmire” of the Iraq War. read full story / add a comment
