Reports from down the country from August 2008 to December 2009 show consistent opposition to proposed waste facilities from local residents, including opposition to attempted expansion of existing facilities and co-location of facilities with existing waste facilities. While opposition to landfilling and incineration has continued, it has been joined by opposition to other activities of the waste disposal industry, including waste storage, transfer and recycling facilities and biological waste treatment facilities, including objections to sludge disposal, whether by land spreading, drying or sea disposal. read full story / add a comment ![]()

This is a response to the SWP's reply which appeared on thier website in late August. Their material was in reply to previous Socialist Party material on the issues of left co-operation, new mass workers party and left election slates. The Socialist Party believes our reply is an accuarte assesment of the discussions that took place among groups on the left in the run in to the recent local elections and outlines our views on many of the issues facing the left. We believe there should be a left slate for the next general election and we hope our reply can assist that process. read full story / add a comment ![]()

It is impossible to give credit to one place, one time, one person for the starting of any social movement, as it takes the ideas, energy and enthusiasm of countless people to reach a 'Critical Mass', but San Francisco, September 1992, certainly marked itself clearly on the map as a launch-pad for the Critical Mass movement, going on from there to spread throughout the world to all nine(?) corners of the globe and taking place in an estimated 325 cities. Now after seventeen years it is still growing and currently takes place in four cities around Ireland (that we know of?). In true DIY style Critical Mass co-incidentally returned to the streets of Belfast and Dublin simultaneously on Friday the 25th of September last after being sorely missed by many for a long time. To their credit Cork and Galway have been keeping it going for many years now (albeit in an on-off fashion). read full story / add a comment |
