This coming Wednesday, April 13th, two thousand people will gather in Dublin’s Citywest Hotel for the sold-out POSSIBILITIES 2011 civic summit. POSSIBILITIES is organised by three Irish non-profit organisations: Afri, Children in Crossfire and SpunOut.ie and aims to inspire people, young and old, to become vocal and active in transforming our country and our planet for the better. The event will be attended by the exiled and soon to retire Tibetan leader, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who accepted a personal invitation to come to Ireland from his close friend, Derry man Richard Moore. Richard was blinded by a rubber bullet at the age of 10, and went on to seek out and befriend the British soldier who shot him. read full story / add a comment

There is not one word on his literature about his position on abortion, civil partnership, his opposition to gay rights in general, his opposition to sex education. Not one word about religious values. No reference to his support for the Iona Institute and the right wing economic policies of its director David Quinn (overspending on public services was the problem) His Brief CV makes no mention of his period as sec to archbishop Connell. He is only for adult stem cell research etc You would think he was a soft-hearted liberal! When will he come out as a catholic extremist? read full story / add a comment ![]()

Below is an open letter to Bob Geldof regarding the offer he has received of an honorary doctorate from Ben Gurion University in Israel. The IPSC urges Mr. Geldof not to accept this dubious doctorate, for to do so would be aiding in the whitewash of Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people. We would also ask you to send emails to Bob Geldof asking him not to accept this doctorate, at the following mails: info@krugercowne.com, tina@bobgeldof.com, enquiries@bobgeldof.com read full story / add a comment

How can we think beyond the immediate pressures of responding to the recession, the IMF/EU bailout, the elections and so on? How has the ground shifted under the feet of social movements in the last few years? Where do struggles for equality and global justice stand now? This event brings together activists and researchers from Mexico, Scotland, the US and Ireland in an open event aimed at thinking strategically and understanding both what is now becoming harder to imagine and what is now becoming possible. read full story / add a comment

March 21 is the start of the New Year in Iran. IUF, education International, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (the three international union federations with member organizations in Iran) and the ITUC together send a message of solidarity to all Iranian workers fighting for trade union rights and independent unions: “Today, New Year in Iran, the international trade union movement sends fraternal greetings to you, our sisters and brothers, fighting for basic worker rights against an oppressive regime. For daring to speak out and to exercise your right to form trade unions, to represent and defend your interests and to bargain with employers, Iranian workers have been sacked, arrested as criminals, tortured and imprisoned. Some, like Kamangar*, have been executed; others await their execution; and the threat of death and possible judicial murder hangs over all those who seek to challenge misery and oppression by organizing at their workplace for collective action. read full story / add a comment |
