Where is the UN? Where is Clinton? Where is NATO? Where are the Sanctions? Where are the international conferences in support of the Saudi Shia people? Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy, a dictatorship, but it doesn't bother those who are out destabilise Syria. Actually Saudi Arabia is arming and bankrolling the Syrian fundamentalists.

Two men have been killed in Saudi Arabia during a protest against the arrest of a prominent Shia cleric.

Activists said Akbar al-Shakuri and Mohammed al-Filfil were shot by police while attending a demonstration in Qatif, a city in Eastern Province.

The interior ministry said there had been no clashes with police, and that the incident was being investigated. read full story / add a comment

After a 9-hour debate, the Italian Supreme Court has issued its final sentence against the 25 defendants – policemen and heads of security forces – responsible for the violence against the activists sleeping in the Diaz school during the G8 summit in Genoa in 2001. Result: most of the charges have been declared time-barred, leading to impunity for all the people involved. In the meantime, 10 activists are facing a total of 100 years of jail between themselves for crimes of “devastation and looting”. read full story / add a comment

“The greatest gift of the garden is the restoration of the five senses” – Hanna Rion

Since the beginning of February 2012 the CDC along with residents from Tom Kelly Flats, set out to create a community garden for the area. Although at the time, we were entering into the unknown scene of gardening and were operating on an experimental and trial and error basis, we’re happy to announce that the initiative was a great success.

Today (8/7/12) the CDC along with residents in Tom Kelly Flats began the first harvest of the community garden. Our first main crop to be harvested was our organic potatoes, we then harvested some of our organic vegetables as well. read full story / add a comment

As Hugo Chavez faces another election the capitalist media has gone into overdrive. Its message is that dissent is crushed in Venezuela. Yet from below comes another meme: the story of alternative media. Full text at link.

Today we celebrate the national day of journalists in Venezuela. Because of this day, it’s worth remembering a phrase that was written in the streets of Argentina during the December 2001 crisis: “They piss on us and the press says it’s raining”. This aphorism captions the situation of the social media today. Readers are reading, listening, or watching the information they receive more and more carefully.

However, the people of Venezuela have gone beyond that. Thanks to legal, technological, technical, and formative support from the government of the president, Hugo Chavez, and because of the determination of citizens after 2000, a national system of community and alternative media started to be born. It’s a system which, even though it has a long way to go, it is a symbol of collective organisation and the satisfying of everybody’s right to communicate. read full story / add a comment

The Iran Tribunal - convened to put the Tehran regime in the dock for its massacre of 5,000-10,000 political prisoners in 1988 - took place in London over June 18-22. While it largely went unnoticed by the public in Britain, it caused uproar amongst sections of the Iranian left.

The tribunal was not the first well-financed attempt to divert the genuine anger of the Iranian people, and their hatred of the Islamic regime (in its many factions), towards dubious ends. Similar stunts have taken place before under the auspices of so-called NGOs - which turn out to be little more than fronts for the United States and the European Union. read full story / add a comment

RTE’s website has two interesting news reports today:
1) Eamon Gilmore is off to a socalled “Friends of Syria” meeting in Paris, the aim of which is to support the overthrow of the Assad regime. It is all reminiscent of the moves to topple Ghadaffi in Libya a year ago.
2) The other news report informs us of the widespread human rights abuses now being carried out in “free” Libya. Up until now the western media has done its utmost to hide the chaos and bloodshed that has occurred since the overthrow of Ghadaffi, but eventually some of the truth had to come out.

Justice for Eric Oliver!
international / crime and justice / press release Friday July 06, 2012 05:05 by Kefira Baron   image 1 image
On June 12th a group of over 10 local white residents stormed onto the property of the Oliver family home, shouting racial epithets and demanding that the family hand over Eric Oliver’s 16-year-old friend Mikey Vasquez.
The family refused and came under assault by the white mob, Eric came to his family’s defense and drove the mob away. The defeated mob members called the police to continue the attack on Eric Oliver. While Oliver was initially held on $100,000 bond, no arrests were made of the more than 10 white people who intruded onto the Oliver family’s property and assaulted its inhabitants. Police refused to take statements from neighbors who witnessed the attack. This Saturday July 7th, community members and activists will march in Bronson, Florida to demand justice for Eric Oliver. read full story / add a comment

Members of several animal protection groups and anti blood sports organisations protested outside the Boylesports outlet at Westmoreland Street in Dublin on Thursday, July 5th. Among the protesters was Independent Dail Deputy Maureen O' Sulivan, who with Deputy Clare Daly plans to move a Private Members Bill to tackle hare coursing.

The demo focused on this bookmaker’s sponsorship of the horrific cruelty of this blood sport. Each year it pours huge amounts of money into the so-called “sport”, which involves the terrorising and savage mauling of captive wild hares in a wire-enclosed field or park.

This year’s island-wide Permaculture Gathering will take place on an evolving Permaculture farm in the heart of Ireland this August 3rd – 6th. Building on the momentum from last years gathering in Wicklow, our goal again this year is to organize a weekend camp in a private location to support the growing number of permaculturalists in Ireland by providing an opportunity to network, celebrate & learn from one another.

Opportunities for learning how to work in non-hierarchal ways and share the surplus of knowledge will be key. This will not be a passive event laid on by some others, but rather an active participatory gathering where we create it together. Every participant has a role in making the event happen. Anybody can get involved and help out.

The Government, having reviewed the whole matter with great care and with reference to any future operations, have decided that the techniques...The statement that I have made covers all future circumstances."As foreshadowed in the Prime Minister's statement, directives expressly prohibiting the use of the techniques, whether singly or in combination, were then issued to the security forces by the Government."[3] These are still in force and the use of such methods by UK security forces would not be condoned by the Government. The leading nationalist party of that time, the SDLP took a principled stand and resigned from Stormont, "the sectarian parliament for a sectarian people," as boasted by Unionist leaders. read full story / add a comment
