Applications for asylum were up 14% on the previous 12 months after a surge in migrants reaching Britain in small boats, according to official figures. So much for Labour's promise to "smash the gangs".

It is simplistic to blame the recent spike in wildfires on climate change, writes Paul Homewood. A more likely cause is the rewilding of uplands, supposedly to cut carbon emissions, and poor management of forested land.

''Five TDs, cosy in the warmth of the taxpayer-subsidised Dail members' bar, played a cruel prank on independent TD Mattie McGrath as he battled on behalf of a farmer in trouble with a financial institution.

As Mr McGrath, who is diabetic, was in the 10th hour of a sit-in at the offices of Friends First along with five others, Dail colleagues were creased with laughter as they made a hoax call purporting to be from Pizza Hut, offering free pizza to the protesters.

In on the mocking skit were Labour's Michael McCarthy, Fine Gael deputies Tom Hayes and Patrick O'Donovan and Fianna Fail TDs Michael Moynihan and Dara Calleary.

Mr McGrath fell for the joke, he admitted yesterday.

In the call, Mr McCarthy who has a reputation as a mimic, purported to be an Italian.

"They should be ashamed of themselves. While they were warming their backsides in Leinster House, Mattie McGrath was out working for a farmer who wasn't even in his constituency," he said.''

''A deaf man has apologised for the death of a man who was hit by a bus following an alleged roadside altercation, a court has heard.

Edward Connors, who is profoundly deaf, has been charged with the manslaughter of Eoghan Dudley.

The 28-year-old died last Thursday evening after suffering severe head injuries in the incident in Dublin city centre.

Connors, 29, who has been living in a homeless hostel in Dublin, was brought before the city's District Court where proceedings were translated through a sign language interpreter.

Cahir O'Higgins, defending, requested that his client have an interpreter present when booked in to prison. He told the judge that Connors also relied on a methadone prescription and asked that all medical assistance be given to him in prison. No application was made for bail. The judge granted legal aid and requested the appropriate authorities to ensure whatever medical assistance is needed.''

US conducts a nuclear test on Dec 6th while continuing to demonise Iran and impose ever more crippling sanctions on the Iranian state which mainly just harm civilians, on account of it's non existent nuclear weapons program. This despite Iran's full compliance with the terms of the NPT, unlike the US itself or it's dog wagging tail in the middle east, Israel. This brings blatant US hypocrisy regarding Iran to a new level. read full story / add a comment

The censored peace cry of traditional Irish republicans, has long been 'peace with justice' while Mahatma Gandhi himself said that injustice must be made visible for a real peace. Which politicians are actively working for justice in the island of Ireland, as opposed to those pontificating about it for political gain, ought to be a priority of all Irish people who genuinely love peace with justice. Peter Robinson and the DUP are not the only hypocrites collecting large salaries, while 'ruling by fooling' in Ireland. But we will always get the politicians we deserve in Ireland because of our lazy censored ignorance and unintelligent shortsighted greed in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

The Carers Association will protest outside Leinster House at 1pm on Tuesday 11th Decmber.

The Carers Association are extremely disappointed with the level of reduction of over 19% in the respite grant paid to over 77,000 family carers, 20,000 of whom receive no other support from the state for providing full-time care for a family member from their own resources. The grant is used by carers to buy in home care or pay for residential respite care for the cared for person in order to give the carer a much needed break from their caring role. Despite working 7 days a week, 365 days a year carers are entitled to no holidays and no breaks. This grant goes some way towards allowing this. Other carers use the grant to pay bills. read full story / add a comment

Aurora is a 32-year old Costa Rican woman. She has a job that she likes, a good relationship, after months of trying, she is finally pregnant. However, at 8 weeks, the doctors informed her that the fetus has multiple severe malformations that would not allow it to survive outside the uterus, including severe scoliosis, decreased level of amniotic fluid, and a complete absence of abdominal wall which leaves the internal organs such as the liver and intestines outside of the body. She has had many more exams since, which have all confirmed the original diagnosis of a nonviable pregnancy. A little after her first appointment, Aurora started experiencing strong abdominal and back pain that prevent her from working. The circumstances of the pregnancy are seriously affecting her physical and emotional health. Aurora has indicated that “in addition to the physical pain, the stress and suffering resulting from the news have provoked constant sadness, depression, severe stress, insomnia, nightmares, constant tears” read full story / add a comment

The dark forces of Islamist reaction have been unleashed in Egypt. Looks like an Islamic State means one man, one vote - one time. Full text at link.

Muslim Brotherhood (MB) forces supporting Egypt’s Islamist President Mohamed Mursi are carrying out a bloody crackdown in Cairo. Amid intensifying mass protests in the past two weeks against Mursi, the Islamists are mobilizing their forces to try to crush strikes and protests.

In scenes recalling the “Battle of the Camels”—when then-President Hosni Mubarak’s thugs attacked protesting workers and youth on Tahrir Square in the initial days of the Egyptian Revolution last year—MB cadres together with forces of the Salafist Call and al-Gama’a al-Islamiyya assaulted a sit-in of several hundred peaceful protesters in front of the presidential palace in Heliopolis in Cairo. read full story / add a comment

Torab Saleth reviews: Ervand Abrahamian, 'The coup: 1953, the CIA and the roots of modern US-Iranian relations', New Press, 2013, pp304, £16.84. Instead of physically opposing the Coup the Tudeh were out distributing leaflets and getting people to sign petitions. Remind you of anyone? Full text at link.

With the continuing efforts made by the self-proclaimed global imperial power, the USA, to achieve ‘regime change’ in Iran, it is timely that a book about the 1953 coup - in which the US, with the help of the British government, carried out exactly such regime change - has been published. The coup was aimed against Mohammad Mosaddegh’s National Front1 government, which had nationalised the British-controlled Iranian oil industries.

If Los Angeles-based Iranian TV stations or Facebook campaigns have given the imperialists a false impression that a nation is waiting to be liberated by the US and its allies, this book should remind them why there is in fact still a deep and widespread hostility in Iran towards the USA and Britain: precisely because of this event. read full story / add a comment

It is widely accepted, not least amongst Israeli public opinion, that Operation Pillar of Defence - the murderous attack on Gaza, which indiscriminately killed all in its path - achieved nothing, other than emphasising Israel’s growing impotence in the region. ...

On November 22 the ceasefire came into effect, and a week later, on November 29, the United Nations general assembly voted to accord Palestine ‘non-member observer status’. Within hours Netanyahu had promised to build an extra 3,000 houses in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and put into effect the ‘E1 plan’ that envisages the expansion of the settlement Ma’ale Adumim, to the east of Jerusalem

HOW DO I TREAT THEE? Let me count the ways. Statistics from the AFP-PNP over a 33-year period (1978-2010) report an aggregate of 29,553 fatalities in the ongoing conflict between GPH and the CPP-NPA categorized thus: 13,412 Communists (45%), 8,264 military and police (28%) and 7,877 civilians (21%). This further translates into 80 deaths daily for the period: 36 Communists, 23 soldiers and police, and 21 civilians.

The key points so far are increases to PRSI working out at about €250 per year per person. Children allowance cut by €10. Property tax set around €500 per year for a Celtic Tiger era house. 10 cents on the pint.

Cuts to electricity allowance and telephone allowance for OAPs. The devil will be in the details. read full story / add a comment
