Ms Ní Ghraidm pleaded guilty to a Section 8 and 9 charge and refused to do community service as she felt her protest was a service to a community under siege from Shell. The Judge then sentenced Ms Ní Ghraidm to 3 months in jail. read full story / add a comment

On the 4th of January, 1969 Irish civil rights protesters from People's Democracy which included the Price sisters suffered a brutal attack from around 200 lyalists armed with iron bars, bottles and stones at Burntollet Bridge in a march from Belfast to Derry. It is an important day in history in that for many, in that it was the start of the troubles in Ireland with a number of young women savagely beaten which included the price sisters. Beaten into the river, it was a baptism of fire for the two young teenagers. read full story / add a comment

In the wake of the recent attack on Gaza that left over 160 Palestinians dead, Ireland has assumed the six-month Presidency of the European Union. However the EU continues to reward and cosy up to Israel, even amid that state’s constant violations of the ceasefire terms, repeated violent provocations in the West Bank, and continued illegal settlement construction and colonisation. Therefore, as part of Israeli Apartheid Week 2012, on Thursday 28th February, from 1-2pm the IPSC will be holding a lunchtime vigil outside EU House, Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 to highlight the European Union’s ongoing facilitation of Israel’s apartheid policies and war crimes. read full story / add a comment

Good news from Northern Ireland . AFAR is delighted in The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) stance in updating the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011 to ban any dog docked after this date from being shown in Northern Ireland. A new Egyptian opposition group has risen to the forefront, as the country marks the second anniversary of the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak. The ‘Black Bloc’ is threatening Islamist authorities and sparking fears of a street war. “This mysterious group appeared around the second anniversary of the January 25 revolution when they released a statement saying they would fight the Muslim brotherhood and strive for the goals of the revolution,” Cairo-based journalist Bel Trew told RT. It’s around that time that the group developed a Facebook page, giving advice on street fighting. Press statement - Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes (CAHWT) 11 Feb 2013 Eyewitness reports of Garda violence at South Dublin County Council 19 year old protester hospitalised: plainclothes Garda ‘smashed my head on wall’ Campaigners against the property tax – who staged one of a number of peaceful protests at Councils today – have questioned why Gardai at South Dublin County Council used brutal and unnecessary force against them, including some plain clothes Gardai. Cannisters of pepper spray were also waved at locals who were manhandled and handcuffed. What Next? A course for returned volunteers Have you recently returned from volunteering overseas? Are you considering 'what's next' in terms of your engagement in development? We have the course for you! What Next? is a course for returned volunteers. The course will take place over a residential weekend (in an eco village – all expenses covered!) and 2 separate days. Throughout the course, there will be a chance to share overseas experiences with other returned volunteers, to make connections and to explore the endless possibilities of ‘what’s next’ after an overseas experience.
