As many Irish parents enjoyed their christmas giving presents to their offspring, I presume they felt secure that their innocence may allow them to grow, to enjoy "a good education" to become participative in their society, to the betterment of themselves.and maybe (hopefully) others as well. And on the way naturally rebellion. and little knocks. and studying hard or not at all. read full story / add a comment

a reminder that the exploitation of children by using them as workers, is ILLEGAL not only in Ireland but in Holy Ulster as well, (where until only thirty years ago they weren't even allowed use a public park on sunday) but throughout the European Union and the world at large. Millions of children around the world miss out on their childhood as a result of poverty. Poverty deprives them of the capabilities needed to survive, develop and thrive. It prevents them from enjoying equal opportunities. It makes children more vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, violence, discrimination and stigmatization. read full story / add a comment

The majority of Europe's constitutions specify the seperation of Ecclesiastic or Theocratic authority from that of the Judiciary, Executive and other State elements. In France the legal seperation is based on "Loi 1905" In Spain it is based on the accord signed between the Vatican and post dictatorship regime in 1979. In Ireland (under the Eire constitution a special place is mentioned for the RC church) in Northern Ireland religious ministers look in the XXI century for photographic evidence of conflict resolution. read full story / add a comment

A Polish general once remarked that the diplomacy was the war carried out through other means. A Chinese sage once founded a school of War which was through the milenia as influential as the school of debating at Rhodes. I have like many others been exposed by others to terror again these last days in Spain as five bombs exploded in Madrid and I watched others wait for that half hour before they knew via the TV that no-one was killed another day till they spoke to their parents and friends. read full story / add a comment

didn't qualify as a free open democratic accountable election like the ones you get for school class rep. Neither candidate has been photographed in an orange scarf or jumper. There is also a third candidate the ultra-nationalist Vadim Tudor. Mr Tudor thinks Rumania's past when it was a fascist dictatorship and fought on the eastern front is not properly remembered. He was in favour. Both Mr Nastase and Mr Basescu think Rumania's past when it was a Soviet satelite with friendly eat-your-young dicator Ceacescu has not been fully changed. read full story / add a comment

The day the italian Columbus, known as Colom to the Spanish, landed on a carribean island claiming it for the crown of Aragon (modern catalonia) thinking he had discovered India is also the day of the patroness of Zaragoza, the virgin Pilar. Spain marks this day with a military parade in Madrid and homage to the flag, and the usual polemic between all those who despise or value such displays of nationalism / imperialism / cultural hegemony et cetera... But there has been something never seen before- Veterans of both the liberation of Paris and the republican side of the civil war and a volunteer for the fascist division on the Russian front have taken part. Meanwhile in Zaragosa, Aragon, there is a big procession with statue bedecked in hundreds of thousands of flowers and a really good televised mass said to invoke the virgin, by no less than three cardinals assisted by all sorts of hooded holy types, a few score of altar boys and not a single woman. read full story / add a comment |
