Policing for the G20 summit in Brisbane this past weekend was of overkill proportions. There was very little in the way of serious resistance, the Guardian reported that cops (6,000) outnumbered protesters and only 14 arrests were made. One of these was Irish-Australian Manning and Assange solidarity and anti-war activist Ciaron O'Reilly, who has been held in custody all weekend and will be brought before Brisbane Magistrates on Monday morning. read full story / add a comment

This is a repost of an important article on the Irish Left Review website and goes into detail on the connection between the Water Charges and the upcoming Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) which is currently being concluded in secret by the EU and US. *** The water charges can and must be defeated by resistance and non-payment but water, as a human right, must also be secured as a publicly owned and controlled resource universally available. Each of the filmmakers go beyond mainstream media representations of Palestine to interrogate the emotional and political landscape through uncanny juxtaposition of image and text. This screening will be followed by a panel discussion about film media and the current situation in Palestine including Laurence Davis (Dept of Government UCC), Rola Abu Zeid O’Neill (Dept of Sociology UCC), Harry Browne (School of Media DIT). Romanticising the working class as much, as the radical left do, merely holds back any chances of authentic political development. It is almost a taboo among this Left to make any serious criticisms of this working class.
