Women's Picket and Speak-Out at Renmore Army Barracks, Galway Wednesday 19th March @ 11.00 am sharp The Global Women's Strike calls on women and men to Strike Out Against War with a women's picket and non-party political grassroots speak-out at the Army Barracks in Renmore, Galway. All welcome. Bring relatives and friends! The Strike calls on all anti-war groups to organise similar pickets at local army barracks, Garda stations and other sites of support for this war - Shannon airport, government offices, the Dail, arms manufacturers and companies making 'dual purpose' materials. Already, women and men in Derry are giving a lead by picketing raytheon, the giant arms manufacturer every week. On Monday, non-violent direct action began to sweep the United States, from Washington DC in the east to Los Angeles in the west, against the second war (Afghanistan was the first) aiming for a US military takeover of the world.... read full story / add a comment

The Northern Ireland Executive's support for the rapid development of the defence industry is a breach of the spirit and letter of the Belfast Agreement and the Northern Ireland Act 1998, according to the Green Party's John Barry, in South Belfast. The newly appointed leader of the Green Party in Northern Ireland, Queen's lecturer, Barry, says he will challenge the legality of the Northern Ireland Executive's support for such initiatives as the Northern Ireland Aerospace Consortium, if elected to the Assembly in the forthcoming elections. Barry believes that support for the development of the defence industry in Northern Ireland and the export of weapons systems is also incompatible with the 'Peace Process'. read full story / add a comment

We had a fantastic Strike! Women from many sectors who took part said 'great', 'colourful and noisy', 'different to usual', 'everyone could speak out and each woman and man had something useful to add', 'not the same old boring speeches by politicians'. Men commented that they were very moved especially by the morning event in Galway where two women from Iraq spoke some truth about the effects of sanctions and war. Around 150 took part between all 3 events in Galway, Ennis and Shannon. Women at events organised by other sectors of the movement in Dublin, Westmeath, Belfast and Cork also distributed Strike information or highlighted the Strike. A massive and unecessary Garda presence met us at Shannon........ read full story / add a comment

On 31 january, activists held a 12 hr vigil in Derry's Guildhall on the 31 anniversary of Bloody Sunday against raytheon, the arms trade, and the commission of the Bloody Sundays of the 21st century. At the end of the vigil they posed for a photograph holding a placard which reads "FREE MARY KELLY", in honour of their Donegal sister charged with allegedly sabotaging an American weapon of mass destruction at Shannon. A spokeswoman for the group told indymedia "As the Bloody Sunday relatives can tell you, States committ horrific crimes against ordinary citizens in the pursuit of their interests. They then turn around and demand that you bury the hatchet and turn the page of history so that they can be let off the hook. That's bonkers. Mary Kelly has it the right way round. The only place to bury your hatchet is in the instruments that are going to read full story / add a comment

raytheon, the worlds largest missile manufacturer is using its Derry software plant, set up thanks to nobel peace laureate saint John Hume ("I didn't know they were the world's largest missile manufacturers") and £800 Million of MOD (British Ministry of Defence) money, to develop targeting software for it's Airbourne Stand Off Radar (ASTOR) and other missile guidance and attack targeting projects. Corporate America and corporate boardrooms across the globe wield enormous political influence. It may in fact be argued that in today's material world corporate interests are the primary motivating factors for political action. In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that power, for a multitude of reasons, has been unjustly mobilized to help sustain 35 years of an illegal Israeli military and economic domination of the Palestinian people. read full story / add a comment ![]()
