This morning at 8.30 the Mossos arrived and carried out the eviction of anohter of Barcelonas most important social centres, Ruina Amalia, one of the last few squatted spaces in the Raval nieghbourhood of the old city. The centre was another of the critical spaces and nodal points of BCN's social movements, about 20 people lived in the squatted space and its social centre hosted a wide range of services and support to the social movement: Okupa office, ASF (architects sans frontiers: arx without borders) support, free internet access, Carcoma the popular carpenter, costume workshop, free shop, kilombo library, theatre and dance space, flamenco patio with cheap bar and cafe. This is another severe blow to critical nodal points of the cities social movement. It seems blow after blow has been dealt out with no real response from the movements..... Is it time for a change of thinking or acting? read full story / add a comment ![]()

As I watch with admiration the grass root activists in Helligendmm, Germany, yesterday - the young students protesting against world poverty and being cordoned off by heavy handed police. Well done to these young people who have no agenda but raw passing against global poverty. read full story / add a comment

From 6-8 June 2007, the G8 Summit – the meeting of the heads of state and government of the USA, Canada, Japan, Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Russia – will take place in Heiligendamm in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Germany’s Baltic Sea. The Summit location is the Kempinski Grand Hotel. As there seems to have been a remarkable absense of discusion, debate and practical organising surrounding this years G8 blockade mobilisations in germany this june, ive attempted to collate some info that may be useful for readers. It is by no means comprehensive and apols of not having mastered HTML but hope it is of some assistance One thing is certain. This year is going to be big. Even though the traditional date have been moved forward a month to try to disrupt our 'disruptions', the unprecedented call, planning and actions will have an impact far greater than recent G8 manifestation. This will be part of making capitalism history. Check out the links below for more info. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The other day I received through my door a booklet on Fine Gael's Lucinda Creighton. The name rang a bell for one main reason. A lady of 29 years facing eviction last October and three emails I sent to Lucinda Creighton. Eventually with my partner Michelle and the assistance of Ruari Quinn we got an extension for this woman of several months. I ask where is this woman's humanity towards the vulnerable people, she is supposed to represent in Dublin 4. read full story / add a comment

The Moriarity Tribunal has given us a clear indication of the past state of Irish politics. if we are to learn anything, it should be that political life must be more carefully scrutinised and that initatives proposed by politicians must be more openly debated before taxpayers are asked to pay for such proposals. Charlie was not a bad man, he was just give toys to play with and his friends made the game more real. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The March began at the old railway station in Navan town at Railway Street to draw attention to the fact that this alternative mode of transport has not been seriously considered by the planners. A large crowd gathered, long time campaigners, new campaigners, families with small children who had their faces painted, sported Save Tara stickers and carried balloons. read full story / add a comment

As coalition policy reaches a crisis, may I resurrect an idea? It offers a way out of the current debate whether to "stay the course" (as President George W. Bush has long advocated) or to withdraw troops on a short timetable (as his critics demand). My solution splits the difference, "Stay the course – but change the course." I suggest pulling coalition forces out of the inhabited areas of Iraq and redeploying them to the desert. read full story / add a comment

Apparantly ten foot high cannabis plants planted close to together for strictly medicinal export purposes are difficult to burn. Not even White phosophorus (the soldier's friend) will clear a field of grass. This is bad news for Canadian troops attached to NATO in Afghanistan as they must resort to burning the areas with diesel. A very smelly & nauseating noxioum ambience resulting. read full story / add a comment

Mr Preston wants to know why the journalists and mainstream media are not asking Minister Mc Dowell why he keeps referring to the attack on his daughter to the criminal case which resulted from investigations at the Goose Pub and not to the conspiracy of silence surrounding the removal and alteration of documents related to the civil case, in which he has implicated Mr Joe Costello TD? Mr Preston wants to know who provided the doorman service to the Goose Pub, where two people implicated in the assault on his daughter were allowed free access. Witnesses who made statements to the Gardai were minors and served openly in the pub and allowed access to the facilities. When Ms Preston was attacked, Mr Preston wants to know why the security at the pub called the gardai and not an ambulance. The girl was left standing outside the pub for fifteen minutes with a bleeding face. Two people implicated in the case have faced serious criminal charges. One is deceased, (shot). Mr Preston asks again why Michael Mc Dowell TD refers the issue to the criminal case and not the tampering with evidence in a civil case. He wants indymedia readers to be aware that the political parties who fight for rights of citizens do not stand in solidarity with him. He is forty three days on hunger strike. He has asked for Brian, who previously reported the story to make contact regarding the situation at the Goose pub. read full story / add a comment

Peter wanted an excerpt from a letter about Palestine , published with this article, it contains a quote by Terence Mac Swiney: "It is not those who can inflict the most but those who can endure the most who will conquer" The heading and date of the letter, which was published in an Irish newspaper recently was torn off, he retains some of the body of it, because of its pertinence to his case. Someone brought it to him during the course of the week. Day 41: He is experiencing little in the way of symptoms. He has sciatica in his back and headaches, for which he is taking solpadeine. His movement is good and he is walking alright. he is looking thinner and needs to sit a lot. The anger is there he wants people to know that the people involved in the cases around his daughter are murdering him and asserts again his desire not to be removed from the Dail, by ambulance. read full story / add a comment

The Triple Arm of Good Governance: the Judiciary, the Gardai and the offices of Parliament. Included herein: A Question tabled for written reply to Minister Micheal Mc Dowell TD. A response to the written reply by Peter Preston. To be added at Mr Preston's request: "Before each Dail session, the Ceann Comhairle says a prayer that goes something like this, Through your divine inspiration may all our actions, works and words come from thee..... (Mr Preston insists that his hunger strike is nothing to do with the criminal case, but to be answered by the TD who he accuses of returning to him transcripts altered by a named TD within Dail Eireann). read full story / add a comment

Available in four parts as a pretty high quality download here (for the first time I think):
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4
The film had a complicated gestation but heavily involved the majority of the original Indymedia Ireland gang. We came back from working with Indymedia Italy in Genoa all fired up and determined to start an Indymedia in Ireland. Almost five years ago that was now. The film traces the events of the three days of protests in detail and poses the question - Was it all a setup? If Seattle was 'Star Wars' then this is 'The Empire Strikes Back'. It is made from a combination of footage of the Genoa protests against the G8 shot by 10 members of IMC Ireland, material from the Italy IMC Archives and material from various other sources. This compelling footage combined with on the spot interviews and reenacted voiceover commentary and analysis from various websites which were active during the protests provides a in-depth blow by blow retelling of the story of the three days of the Genoa protests against the G8. The film will be available on DVD in the run-up to the fifth anniversary of the Genoa protests. Watch this space for details. read full story / add a comment |
