The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Brendan O'Donnell died in the central mental hospital a young man (~ 23) about 10 years ago. Whatever happened him the event set alarm bells ringing in my mind. Is it too late now (or too soon?) to seek a transparent public account of his death and how it came about? He was a triple murderer, physically strong and, as far as I know, suicide was not a factor. read full story / add a comment

Tony Wilson had a heart attack this week & after suffering prolonged illness died comfortably yesterday in Manchester. He was a hoot. He played records, he did telly, he started record companies, he made glitzy crap, he started the Hacienda club, he play his part in so many roles. Most of them of such importance to our contemporary culture and media that at first it's just too easy to think he had the long difficult death coming and it doesn't matter if people don't make or do that sort of music or telly or if Manchester still isn't free.

He was 57 years of age. It is highly unlikely that such an entrepeneurial professional gobshite will ever arrive on the scene with such ironic affability.

May he rest in peace.

In a story from the Moscow News today, the deputy head of Russia's environmental agency denied that Shell had tried to bribe him by offering him fifty million dollars.

He wanted to state clearly that he couldn't say for sure that it was Shell, only that "someone" had tried to arrange a meeting with him in Switzerland to discuss the possibility of suspending enviromental checks on the Sakhalin project. No actual amount of money was mentioned either. So that's clear then.

It all brings to mind our own Frank Fahy, a former teacher who has managed to amass a huge property portfolio. Didn't Frank have some Moscow links of his own at one stage? see also www.indymedia.ie/article/76360

Having had our bags stolen in Belfast many years ago, we got invited to Anderstown social club by
some fellas who had tried to stop the snatchers and we went to the club. It is a memory etched
onto my brain and says something important about community memory and retaining those
places for the upcoming generations of this Our Island.

Politically naive southerners like myself did not know the North of Ireland, nor where it was 'safe'
to go , back in the nineties; but you learn quickly enough. our hiking trip coincided with some
appalling tragedies and personal dangers that are largely gone. The London type taxis
Which were 50p were operating and some drivers were being sniped on call-out. read full story / add a comment
