Digna Ochoa
dublin / rights, freedoms and repression / event notice Saturday October 13, 2007 21:54 by Gerald Kelly   image 1 image
Digna Ochoa was a human rights defender who defended people who had suffered serious violations of their human rights. To this date the investigation into her murder has made little progress and the suspicion is growing that the judicial authorities in Mexico have no desire to bring to justice the people responsible.

Jesús Ochoa is Digna's brother. Since her death he has campaigned tirelessly on her behalf. As part of a tour of European countries and as a guest of Amnesty International he will be talking in Dublin on Thursday 18 October at 8.00 PM in The Teachers Club on Parnell Square. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday night the switch was flicked on one of the largest satellite arrays on the planet. Named after Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen the system brings together his dilletentism or whims as a mega-geek & the anglo-saxon culture industrially vital world of SETI and the very murky US involvement in deep Space radio telescope exploration in one project with one stated aim :-

The search for intelligent Alien life.

I'm going to treat today's "system booting" as a piece of tech-news & come at it from the ever reliable anti-trust angle. Thus I hope to raise awareness of the capitalist & philosophical elements of the project rather than spurn the "tinfoil hat" brigade onto anything sillier than they've achieved mostly not by being too suspicious or paranoid but rather by not putting their theories in social or historical context. To that end I'll mix news with a bit of analysis & bit of opinion. read full story / add a comment

On the 4th of October the National Executive of Batasuna, the Basque independence party, were arrested by the Spanish police at a meeting in Segura. This represents a great disrespect on thepart of the Spanish Government for the crisis prone Basque peace process and the fact that it is still their firm belief that the Basque people have no right to freedom and democracy. read full story / add a comment

This week marks the twentieth anniversery of a man murdered to protect a high ranking British agent within the Provisional IRA. It also sees the seventh anniversery of his grandson who himself was murdered only yards away.
Yet the ability to commemorate either of these republicans has been made impossible by a criminal gang operating within the Ballymurphy area.
How could this happen in 'republican' west Belfast? read full story / add a comment

Yippee, it's the 12th of the tenth month again. This is the day that all over the world people get a day off work if they've got that sort of job so they may reflect what being Hispanic is about & how jolly good Colombus was for being credited with discovering India.
It offers a wide range of people from South Americans to Basques & Catalans to demonstrate that they are not in any way Hispanic & have no commonwealth with Spain or her democracy & then get arrested for it. Whilst on the other side of the wondrous spectrum of humanity it offers people a chance to look at the army in Madrid & the annual hissing of Zapatero in the minute of silence...........something for everyone........ read full story / add a comment
