If the BBC's Standards Committee, which is reviewing the corporation's coverage of climate change, wants a good example of bias, it should take a look at its report of recent floods in Pakistan, says Paul Homewood.

I write this letter to you the Fishermen of Erris, to your association, and to you all as individuals, and as men, in the light of Shell ‘intransigence‘, as you put it, and the arrival of Shell’s pipe-laying ship ‘the Solitaire’ off our shores.

It seems Shell have hit a right nerve with you guys and you’re very correct to be reacting with the defiance you’re adopting … again and at this time.

I’m sure you’re considering certain legal action to protect your fishing rights in Broadhaven Bay and beyond, and very good grounds indeed you have to do that, and succeed. But I wouldn’t be relying on that alone, if things don’t work out like!

If the law makers are making laws for Shell and Shell only, those ‘laws’ should be disobeyed in any case.

And we’re all well very aware of some of the bold and important stances you’ve already taken in the part you play in the hard fight against Shell and the Irish Government for the protection of Erris, it’s families, communities and it’s environment on and off shore. read full story / add a comment

Choice Ireland is finishing a month of action against the rogue pregnancy counselling agency the WRC this Saturday. Choice Ireland has undertaken this month of action to raise local awareness about the operation of the clinic in the area and to generate support for our upcoming Oireachtas hearing where we will argue that legislation should be introduced to shut down rogue agencies. Choice Ireland therefore asks all like minded organisations to come and show their support for our campaign to shut down the WRC this Saturday at 1pm at number 50 Upper Dorset Street. Bring your banners and flags!

What a time we live in - recession time! Economic downturn, the onslaught of the Right, the unsettling quiescence of the Left, the besieging of the trade union movement; it's all coming at us so fast it's difficult to know which uttered untruth to dissect, which unstated truth to promulgate. So here's a diary - a recession diary - to keep up with the rapid-fire events and commentary - as rapid as the downturn itself. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday July 29th the HSE were presented with 5,000 signatures on petitions demanding the maintaining of A&E services in Ennis, Nenagh and St.John’s Hospitals. The Socialist Party, who collected the petitions, claim that this is only the beginning and that an active campaign must be built. Socialist Party spokesperson, Cian Prendiville said: “The HSE are unlikely to give up on their agenda of centralisation and cutbacks without a fight. Petitions can be a first step, but what is needed is for people to come along to the upcoming health forum on July 29th and use it as a launching pad for a local action group.” read full story / add a comment

Iñaki de Juana Chaos who is due to be released this Summer has informed both the Basque political prisoner network and the authorities of his prison that he is on hunger strike again.

He has offered as reason the concerted media campaign of vilification launched against him in the last days as it was revealed that upon leaving prison and completing his prison sentences he will take up residence in a flat owned by his wife, who he married whilst in prison, on the same street as several victims of ETA.
