Published: 29 July, 2008 Sinn Féin Environment and Natural Resources Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has severely criticised a decision by the Department of the Environment to grant planning permission without approval from An Bord Pleanála to Shell E&P Limited for a key section of the Corrib onshore pipeline at Glengad in County Mayo. For the second year running, the city of Belfast will have the honour to host the Anti-Racism soccer World Cup between August 1 and August 3. Timed to coincide with the opening of west Belfast's hugely successful Féile an Phobail, the Anti-Racism World Cup is intended as a show case of solidarity between people of all nationalities and a demonstration against discrimination and division. read full story / add a comment

Larger forces were at work. China and india don't want to be flooded by cheap food imports from the US. In other words they want to maintain their own small scale agriculture and their own food security. This is spelt out by Mandelson in his blog. Walden Bello of Focus on The Global South, and a noted ongoing critic of the WTO and neo-liberalism more generally, sees the re-localisation of agriculture (that such a collapse may make possible) as central to the mitigation of climate change.
