UCC has paid huge sums to a criminal professor
This story is not for republication. I bear responsibility for the things I write. I have read the guidelines and understand that I must not write anything untrue, and I won't.
This is a public interest story about a complete failure of governance and management at UCC.

offsite link Deliberate Design Flaw In ChatGPT-5 Sun Aug 17, 2025 08:04 | Mind Agent
Socratic Dialog Between ChatGPT-5 and Mind Agent Reveals Fatal and Deliberate 'Design by Construction' Flaw
This design flaw in ChatGPT-5's default epistemic mode subverts what the much touted ChatGPT-5 can do... so long as the flaw is not tickled, any usage should be fine---The epistemological question is: how would anyone in the public, includes you reading this (since no one is all knowing), in an unfamiliar domain know whether or not the flaw has been tickled when seeking information or understanding of a domain without prior knowledge of that domain???!

This analysis is a pretty unique and significant contribution to the space of empirical evaluation of LLMs that exist in AI public world... at least thus far, as far as I am aware! For what it's worth--as if anyone in the ChatGPT universe cares as they pile up on using the "PhD level scholar in your pocket".

According to GPT-5, and according to my tests, this flaw exists in all LLMs... What is revealing is the deduction GPT-5 made: Why ?design choice? starts looking like ?deliberate flaw?.

People are paying $200 a month to not just ChatGPT, but all major LLMs have similar Pro pricing! I bet they, like the normal user of free ChatGPT, stay in LLM's default mode where the flaw manifests itself. As it did in this evaluation.

offsite link AI Reach: Gemini Reasoning Question of God Sat Aug 02, 2025 20:00 | Mind Agent
Evaluating Semantic Reasoning Capability of AI Chatbot on Ontologically Deep Abstract (bias neutral) Thought
I have been evaluating AI Chatbot agents for their epistemic limits over the past two months, and have tested all major AI Agents, ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, Perplexity, and DeepSeek, for their epistemic limits and their negative impact as information gate-keepers.... Today I decided to test for how AI could be the boon for humanity in other positive areas, such as in completely abstract realms, such as metaphysical thought. Meaning, I wanted to test the LLMs for Positives beyond what most researchers benchmark these for, or have expressed in the approx. 2500 Turing tests in Humanity?s Last Exam.. And I chose as my first candidate, Google DeepMind's Gemini as I had not evaluated it before on anything.

offsite link Israeli Human Rights Group B'Tselem finally Admits It is Genocide releasing Our Genocide report Fri Aug 01, 2025 23:54 | 1 of indy
We have all known it for over 2 years that it is a genocide in Gaza
Israeli human rights group B'Tselem has finally admitted what everyone else outside Israel has known for two years is that the Israeli state is carrying out a genocide in Gaza

Western governments like the USA are complicit in it as they have been supplying the huge bombs and missiles used by Israel and dropped on innocent civilians in Gaza. One phone call from the USA regime could have ended it at any point. However many other countries are complicity with their tacit approval and neighboring Arab countries have been pretty spinless too in their support

With the release of this report titled: Our Genocide -there is a good chance this will make it okay for more people within Israel itself to speak out and do something about it despite the fact that many there are actually in support of the Gaza

This story is unverified but it is very instructive of what will happen when cash is removed
THIS STORY IS UNVERIFIED BUT PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO OR READ THE TRANSCRIPT AS IT GIVES AN VERY GOOD IDEA OF WHAT A CASHLESS SOCIETY WILL LOOK LIKE. And it ain't pretty

A single video report has come out of China claiming China's biggest cities are now cashless, not by choice, but by force. The report goes on to claim ATMs have gone dark, vaults are being emptied. And overnight (July 20 into 21), the digital yuan is the only currency allowed.

Thanks to the cuddly, cute and soft nature of the seal cub (Pinnipedia Otariidae) many people on the left in Ireland acitvely oppose and further _boycott_ all things Canadian.

But Quebecois elections are always interesting. And as the Canadians (& Quebecois) have just elected a new government as a consequence of their 39th general elections : I thought to include them in the list of elections archived on the newswire.
64.5% of Canadians and Quebocois registered to vote did so. This means a "non vote" (for whatever reasons) of 35.5%.

:["The wife and five children of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet were arrested on Monday on tax evasion and fraud charges as part of an investigation into secret, multimillion dollar bank accounts.
Officials of the court who asked not to be identified said Judge Carlos Cerda ordered the arrest of Pinochet's wife, Lucia Hiriart, and their children on charges of filing "maliciously incomplete" and false tax declarations involving millions of dollars. Cerda also ordered the arrests of Monica Ananias and Oscar Aitken, a personal secretary of Pinochet and the former executor of Pinochet's will."]: read full story / add a comment

"F4J leader Matt O'Connor announced last night (January 17) that he was suspending the operations of the group pending enquiries into allegations contained on the cover of this mornings Sun Newspaper that 'extremist sympathisers' associated with the group had planned to kidnap the Prime Minister's Son, Leo Blair.

F4J say they condemn any such action unreservedly and that the group is increasingly having it's name 'hijacked' by a growing number of militant extremists and that it would seriously consider the long term viability of the campaign.

The group say that ex members have reportedly been in contact with the Anti-Terrorist Unit SO13 from Scotland Yard who said that activists would be shot on sight if engaged in any protests in Westminster."

:-) its a Sunday, and that means "mass" things. & in Chile the mass did the voting thing, and because it is a *legal obligation* of Chilean citizenship when in residence and of suffrage age to vote...

Thus there really isn't a "not vote" count. But over 200,000 people have presented their documents in Chilean police stations today to prove they were more than 200km from their polling point. Considering Chile is a country which stretches for over 6,340 kilometres in length, its quite easy to dodge the polls. read full story / add a comment

General Sir Michael Rose (1940–) is a British soldier born in what was then British India. Rose was educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford and the Sorbonne. He joined the Coldstream Guards later serving with the Parachute Regiment. He was Commander of 22 SAS in 1980 and took control of the operation to free the hostages during the Iranian Embassy Siege. After returning to the regular army, his best-known appointment was as Commander UNPROFOR Bosnia 1994-95 during the aftermath of the Yugoslav Wars.

On January 9, 2006, Rose called for Tony Blair to be impeached over the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, saying on BBC Radio 4's Today programme "To go to war on what turns out to be false grounds is something that no one should be allowed to walk away from."

He then followed up the BBC radio 4 interview with an opinion piece in The Guardian:-

In a few days mostly un-noticed by most, EU presidential power will go from the UK to another member of the 25 states, the lucky recipient is Austria.

Austria has quite a history, it used have an empire. & in the last years almost all of its ex-posessions have joined the Europe of 25.

It is also a neutral state, its neutrality being a condition of its post war occupation and partition when rather than being held responsible for WW2 it was declared the first victim of Nazism. Despite the fact that Hitler was an austrian and the majority of Concentration camp directors were austrian too. read full story / add a comment

There were lots of elections in 2005, only a few of which got covered on indymedia ireland. But because the idea of democracy really took off so much, I wasn't able to write a "how did they vote or "not vote"" article as had in previous years been attempted.

Just a quick recap - listed here.
{My personal favourite was the Andorran general election.}

There comes a stage in the progress of a people through their misery when not even our words may offer proper description or testimony to their suffering or optimism.
I can not underestimate my respect and admiration for the writer known as "Salam Pax". I first read his posts on http://www.almuajaha.com which was the name used by 7 Iraqi students for their collective which proposed in 2003 one week after the US invasion to start "baghdad indymedia".

This was the mission statement :-

"For decades almost all governments in the world, including our own, abused and terribly ignored the basic humanity of the Iraqi people. Al-Muajaha aims to provide an open forum for all Iraqis to freely debate current issues, and in so doing educate themselves and the world." read full story / add a comment

French youth have enjoyed secular secondary education and been taught the values of the republic "liberty equality fraternity" fo 100 years. As insidiously the triad of republican values has seen added the quaternion (*) "Equity" added. France has changed: 500 French youth were attacked by police last night for attempting a rave in Rennes, shouting as near 40 were arrested "Liberté!".

On Sundays I occasionally publish an opinion piece:-

I want you to ponder how Mrs Larkin told Jim he looked great just because she was on her knees, and then she arose, and that beautiful human detail is what seperates you from and joins you to the birth of the Irish Labour movement. Jim thought it was such a funny line, and would be a secret testament to

Lest anyone think that strike action is old-fashioned the main Italian unions for workers in print and broadcast media have called a 48 hour series of stoppages starting today.

This is the third strike in Italy by media workers this year not including the general strike of November 25th & the fifth strike in the media sector in Europe in 2005. Most recently the workers of Liberation the French left-daily protested the rescue package of their company, and earlier this year a one day stoppage at the BBC saw workers there fight lay offs and continuing privitisation. read full story / add a comment

this morning the italian police started raiding Nestle warehouses throughout italy seizing a number of product ranges amounting to 30 million litres of treated dairy products marketed to nursing mothers.

The reason being they have been found to contain chemicals assocaited with embalming processes, which is unsurprisingly illegal in both Italy and the EU.

Nestle, known to some as the "famine corporation" though Swiss owned, takes over 85% of its profits from sales of "food" in other countries.

The corporation has been long been directly linked to famine, ironically considering it sells sweeties. read full story / add a comment
