Amidst the collapse of the Irish economy, the inhabitants of a rural hinterland begin to feel the touch of the dead hand of the housing market. Set in the notorious ghost estates of post 'celtic tiger' Ireland, Wallets Full of Blood features Dennis Hopper as the voice of Brian (Brains) Ahern. 'Brains' is a developer and a 'big man' in politics. He's also the overseer of a particularly gory property price collapse on 'Fiddler's Green'. He reckons he can clean up as a result of the creeping zombification all around him but his plans take on a zero-sum logic of their own. read full story / add a comment

Its not just in Ireland that teachers have to strike for their basic rights. But in Iran its a lot more dangerous: unions are banned and strikes are illegal. Strikers are often flogged. Support the Iranian Teachers! Full text at link. According to reports from teachers in various towns and cities in Iran most teachers are solidly behind the broad-based strike on 21-23 February. The lack of access to the press and the media in general for publicising the strike has meant that news about the country-wide strike has been passed on using SMS, email, personal weblogs and telephone conversations. read full story / add a comment ![]()

In a desperate bid to raise more money for the starving Irish bankers, activists from the Final Nail Party took to the streets this morning to collect money from people on their way to work. On top of cuts in wages and conditions of employment, a reduction in services such as public transport and education, and various spurious "levies" and increased taxation; this morning's collection was an opportunity for ordinary workers to contribute directly to help the bankers, some of whom will earn less than two million euro this year. read full story / add a comment

There was standing room only in UCC last night as Dr David Prentice and Wesley Smith addressed a seminar on embryonic stem cell research. Although UCC academics who had supported the proposal to introduce embryonic stem cell research were asked to debate, they didn't seem up to the challenge. More than 300 people heard from Dr David Prentice, an internationally recognized expert in stem cell research who tracks the success of adult stem cell treatments across the world. Last year the prestigious magazine Science published his work in this area. He was joined by Wesley Smith, a renowned ethicist who is a lively and much-sought after debater and commentator on many life issues. Last night, Mr Smith received sustained applause when he told a packed theatre in UCC that embarking on embryonic stem cell research would degrade the university. read full story / add a comment
